How so? I may have a strong opinion but kindly show me exactly where I have made false statements or misrepresented facts?

I wasn't disputing which maker had the most local content, I was disputing prydey's implication that the Cruze could not be classed as Australian made because it contains imported components, yet other cars which also contain imported components such as Falcon can......

I am on 55k a year, and on the highest pay a production worker can be on. And forget overtime, we have not had it since Orion launch.

I think as discussed the base rates are fair it would be interesting to know, from the horses mouth what other benefits the workers get. It might help clear up a misconception on this forum. I will go jump if you say so... JP |

The average automotive worker employed by Ford/Holden/Toyota (not through a sub hire) is on 55K PA++, most of the workers earn an extra 12K-15K in overtime (from my experience in the industry, which being honest stopped 6 years ago as a direct employee).
We should not expect production workers to earn below $26ph as a base rate on 38h week, they deserve that and it gives them room to improve and earn more based on performance and extra responsibility taken. However, RDO's need to be phased out (as unpopular as that statement will be, it plays havoc with productivity, I understand it's nice for the worker, but if the business can afford 10% of their staff being off any given day of the month, then they can afford to cut 10% of employees). On another note, management need to stop the B/S to staff about quality issues in production, when design faults aren't rectified for up to 18 months, hurting consumer confidence and lowering sales, jeopardizing future sales.

No, and I can see what you are getting at.........
I originally replied to clear the silly misconception that we are all on 100k a year.

I was staggered last night on the ABC I think, to see how little automation is used in the component industry:
Manually removing what looked like centre consoles from the injection moulding machine; Manually removing heat shields from the moulding machine; Manually assembling a gear lever, gaiter etc. I'm sure China would use robots? It made me wonder how different things would be if the Billions given to the manufacturers was used to improve efficiency and lower costs in the component industry.

Far from it ...period
As I said they source their steel from China & other Asian suppliers. Bluescope was also a supplier who's volume was drastically reduced in preference for cheaper Asian steel.. which Bluescope lodged an appeal to challenge http://www.customs.gov.au/webdata/re...MHoldenLtd.pdf

We do get a discount, but need to be careful what info I give out as you all may appreciate.
We are well looked after make no mistake, but the BS I keep hearing about astronomical wages is crap. We are on average wages and it all means diddly anyway because we are going to close down irregardless.

Why I ask is to gather information before I form an opinion, It seems many already have an opinion, perhaps its made through their own personal investigations, through their own bias or a indignant sense of how do they get that much when I only get that much, I'm better than them jealousy...I don't know You can see why asking someones wage is such Taboo in our culture, we feel we have to protect our pride or something, when in reality we should share, be open and transparent to join forces against the system, a system designed to keep us down. Personal, social and national politics is the scourge of our society. Again thanks for sharing and good luck JP |

About 3 years ago I worked with a women whose son worked at Ford. Mum who worked in the school system and NOTHING to do with Ford, drove a fully maintained, top of the line Falcon for which she paid diddly squat - one of two cars her son received as part of his remuneration. Many year's ago, the father of a Ford co-worker was offered the option of early retirement from his senior position at Ford. Two cars for life anywhere in the world, free medical for life, and full pension. When I worked at Ford, staff were driving fully maintained Lasers at (from memory) $7 a week. You're not alone in quoting base salary only; next time you hear a nurse whinging about their wages, ask them about the $10k odd tax-free component, and their unlimited $$$ tax-free meal and entertainment card. So back to the point made by others way back... anyone looking at labour costs as an input to the cost of manufacturing needs to be quoting the hourly rate paid to the workers + ALL on costs.

One steel doesn't mean its Aussie made, I've unloaded quite a few containers of steel rolls from Asian countries that were bound for one steel, and blue scope, amongst others...
With cruze I thought it was only the hanging panels that were stamped here, the main body panels are basically ckd? Interesting topic though, at what stage is it Australian made, assembled or imported? |
