Interview with the Greek pm on why they have been so successful in Europe. Remember this was a country that was on the brink during the GFC.

His take..
1. Took decisions early
2. Listened to the experts

Luckily for NZ we imported a couple of cases so we are not left off the covid count, not sure how these two slipped through, would have thought it was common sense to test every one crossing the boarder in recent times, let alone let them be released from two week isolation early without a test (one of there parents passed away). Still it shows how easy it is to drop the ball on this.

I see Victoria Police are being Victoria Police again - fine for Pizza shop in Essendon after having 21 people inside last week and yesterday Cherry Bar was also fined.

Unfortunately unable to provide links but was on ABC 24 yesterday.

Typical - no fines for attendees of 40,000 strong protest but 21 people in a restaurant and fines dished out.

I guess 'low hanging fruit' and all.

Seems to me like the second wave is now on its way through China. Good chance that we'll have a second wave here too, with our loosening of restrictions.

Beijing shuts all schools, imposes partial travel ban to contain new 'severe' coronavirus outbreak

The coronavirus resurgence, believed to have started in the capital's sprawling Xinfadi wholesale food market, has prompted alarm as China had largely brought its outbreak under control through mass testing and draconian lockdowns.

The country had eased much of its anti-coronavirus measures in recent months as the government all but declared victory against the disease that emerged in the central city of Wuhan late last year.

Fearing that progress could unravel, authorities locked down several residential areas and announced new restrictions on Tuesday, with group sports banned, people ordered to wear masks in crowded enclosed spaces, and inter-provincial group tours suspended.

You mean the very old and unhealthy people who probably would have died from the flu?

Yeah it's sad for them, but it's hardly been the thousands and thousands of deaths we were told were going to happen.

Because we had a small fraction of our regular tourist influx. An unintended benefit of the bushfires....

And our lockdown / social distancing laws.

If it was “Open slather” (all along), we could compare the deaths from different diseases (and say “blah, blah” is just like “what it’s name”), but it wasn’t “Open slather”, and so we can’t.

Have a look at the middle top graph in this link. I think in anyone's language, that would be considered a 'wave'.

Copy of graph:

Perhaps the peak is not as high as some may have been expecting, but that is still a wave.

Meanwhile back in China, it is hard to know if there is a "mutant C19" strain doing the rounds in Beijing or not. Personally I give the CCP and their media zero credibility and this new mutant strain may well be another deflection.

On a plus side, much of the globe has travel restrictions and mandatory isolation, therefore if there is a new mutant it should be better controlled than the original C19. Hopefully, it can stay in China!

We've not looked at any graphs for a little while so here are a couple.

First up the new cases by Continent which shows Europe as being fairly steady, Africa slowly increasing and South America / Asia increasing at a faster rate.

The global new case trend continues to rise:

.. as does the death rate:

With the CDC claiming a 0.3% death rate it pretty much is a stronger flu. It does spread much easier though.

Ridiculous...

I ring Wirrarri Visitor Information Centre (yes they're only doing her job).

Q. I want to go across the Simpson Desert.
A. Sorry the Borders are closed, but you can go as far as Poeppel’s Corner (where Qld, NT, and SA intersect.)

Q. Just to be clear, I'd be using the QAA track which crosses from Qld into NT and then south along the K1 track which crosses from NT into SA before I end up at the Corner
A. Yes, that is perfectly OK - but you can not go any further than the corner, because the borders are closed

I'm guessing if you're quoting numbers, you understand the difference between a CR and an IFR? 0.3% is IFR. The IFR for influenza is significantly lower than 0.3%.

With the border in SA opening to all states from July 20th, I was wondering how that works for those entering Vic/NSW?

Im planning on going camping with some mates to Big Desert Camping ground in Vic that in close to the SA/VIC border on the 30th July, but then come home on the 2nd August. I live in SA so leaving the state isnt a problem. entering Vic could be though? How do the borders work in this regards? Can some explain to me please?

Hey blue, my understanding is that the vic border is open, so you should not see any difference to pre-covid 19 conditions with your travel from SA-Vic-SA.

But, I will check on the Vic government website just to double-check that for you.

Edit: Yep, all good blue

Can I travel within Australia?
Victoria’s borders are open so you can leave and enter Victoria. However, some Australian states and territories have closed their borders or require visitors to quarantine on arrival. Before travelling to another state or territory you should check the rules that your destination has in place.

If you do travel interstate, you should keep 1.5 metres between yourself and others when practical to do so and practise good hygiene – wash your hands regularly and cough and sneeze into a tissue or your elbow.

You can also call the Commonwealth Government's National Coronavirus Helpline on 1800 020 080 to find out what travel requirements and restrictions are in place at your destination.

23 new cases for Australia (mostly Victoria) and no deaths so CMR drops to 1.384% but active cases rise to 409 (5.5%).

No new cases or deaths for NZ so CMR is 1.462% and active cases at 2.

The UK had 1,115 new cases and 184 deaths so the CMR is up to 14.086%.

Just over 25k new cases in the USA yesterday and 849 deaths sees CMR down to 5.394% and active cases drop to 53.7% although the raw numbers are rising again.

Other notable points:
The USA completes 26M tests, the UK 7M, India 6M and Germany 5M;
Germany recorded the highest daily total in 8 weeks;
