If it was right hand drive I'd almost guess Commer as a pot-shot - it has that sort of look about it - were there many made, or just a very small number built?

Not Commer; but note the white one is RHD. This model was not common but a few others from the company were and sold for a year or two in Oz; although still not particularly common here.

More hints: There is actually loose link with Scania and Ford in terms of trucks. Most of its cars ran single or twin SU carburettors.

Most of this company's early cars looked very Renault like.

Is it Japanese and it had a sister that looked vaugely similar to a Corvair in some ways?

EDIT: Aha! It's a Hino!

A Contessa 900 Sprint. I'd have likely never known this car existed. I have to also admit that looking at it it's very hard to guess that it was Japanese, NSU seems more likely than Hino.

Yes Hino Contessa Sprint.

Hino was of course take over by Toyota and in their early days made Renault cars under licence in Japan. Some Ford Rangers were Hinos and Hino sell some Scania Trucks in Japan.

Hino Sprint GT 1300 and Power Unit by Alpine in Dieppe, France (1964~)

Joint project to develop High Performance Light Wight European taste sports car and studying constructing plastic body was prepared for Hino by Alpine in 1964. TOHC engine based on GR100 block was completed in late 1964 and one was in Hino Sprint 1300GT and other was shipped to Japan for engineering study. Chassis design was completed through 1964 that has completely same architecture with Alpine's 1xx series and body skin was plastic as well as all Alpine cars. Hino Sprint 1300 GT was in 1966 Paris Auto Salon with other Hino Contessa, then car was shipped to a part of Hino Plant in Japan (bottom) after benchmarking in driving throughout European motor ways including mountain road. The following picture in the top is the more matured TOHC based on GR100 that was on Hino Sprint GT 1300 and the layout of distributor is now directly driven by CAM shaft. The picture in the bottom was captured in Japan, but the issue is it was not Hino Plant in recent investigation.

And Alpine seems to have driven a lot of the design and you can see a bit of the old Renault Alpine style in the design.

You've got the right idea, though it's nault Renault, and I don't think Zagato's hand was involved in this particular example.
