I'm not a coin collector as such, but lately my piggy bank is so full of loose change I have quite a number of unique coins.

The round 1966 50 cent coins are made of Silver (not like the later one's which are cupro-nickel) and are more valuable and I believe are the coins in which the collectors want

Cheers

The round ones aren't worth much these days as they are only really sold for their silver content (80%). Can pick em up for $6-7 each from any coin dealer. As the others have said, the ones you mentioned have to be proof or at the very least uncirculated to be worth more than their face value.

Don't try and clean it and go to a dealer and get it appraised. Who knows, you might be onto a winner!

Well I was a big coin collector when I was younger and I bought a box collection of every 50c that was produced up untill 2005. I have it somewhere In storage.
I have also been keeping every 50c piece that I recieve in my change since Shappell Corby was put inside and I plan to cash them in when she gets out. I have 3 Dolmios jars full of them (at an undisclosed location) I was given a round one with change once from Chicken Treat, I was stoked with that. Im sure there are some odd ones in there too tho.
any particular questions you wanna know?
My advice is dont by international current currncy coins from coin sellers as they are worth ZIP. I spent heaps of $$ on these in my younger years, I took them to a dealer for evaluation and he just laughed at me. They are great for personal interest but thats about it.
Oh and I have been told that a coin with the ribs on the edge (for the blind) worn off is null and void, can any one confirm this?

Go to eBay, and type in Commemorative 50.
That will give you an idea what is out there, and what they might be worth.

My Dad was a pro coin collector, he ended up selling the lot for a few hundred thou. His proof/mint condition round 50 cent pieces got about $200 each. btw budding coin collectors, you can't make money on non proof coinage, it's just the enjoyment value if for anything else. The old man was one of the few people to have the whole set of 1930's penny's.

If your serious, go for gold coins, there's nothing like holding a coin that's worth ten's of thousands of dollars. btw, he got rid of the lot on advice from the local CIB he was friendly with. They instilled him with all sorts of paranoid stories. When I spoke to them years later, I asked them on who's advice they decided on the idea. The idiots didn't realise that the whole collection was unique and couldn't be resold easily at all.

I am not an expert but the rarest Australian 50 cent coin is the 1969 speciman. Only 1200 of these were minted and last time I looked at one it was worth about $350. Other than this one I don't really think that any others are worth much at all.
