Question Another XR6HP and VCT Question!

Hey guys, according to Ford, the XR6HP produces 164kw with the standard AU Forte exhaust, and the XR6 VCT produces 172kw with VCT and sports exhaust. If you fitted the sports exhaust to the HP engine, how many extra flywheel kw's do you reckon you'd see on the 164kw engine? Can you fit the complete sports exhaust? How much of the VCT's extra power is attributable to the exhaust, and how much to the VCT?

I tried to search, but couldn't find the answers, so sorry if this is a repost.

Thanks!

Fairmont Ghia with the VCT motor and forte exhaust produced 168Kw , whereas the XR6 VCT produced 172Kw - same engine but better exhaust...

My VCT had dual exhaust from the Manifold back, however only one of the pipes were working, the other was blocked off, and hidden behind the rear bar. That gave the car a great sound, but power I can't tell. I never actually drive a loose (>25,000 KM) HP XR6, and I don't know about the exhaust, but the dual VCT in the BA engines give 182 KW, which is only 10 more than the AU VCT. I can not tell how much of that is attributed to the exhaust, or to the hand built engine etc that the AU VCT came with.

Interesting point, never thought of it before, should yield some interesting topic conversation HP vs VCT.

Thanks for the replies guys.

I forgot about the Fairmont VCT!

I think the Fairmont engine is a XR6 VCT, minus the sports exhaust. It, along with all VCT motors start at the same level as the HP with Forte exhaust (164kw), then add VCT gear (+ 4 kw, i.e 168 kw), and for XR6 VCT, add sports exhaust over that (an additional 4 kw for a total of 172kw). So, sports exhaust is worth approx 4 kw (flywheel) to a HP if could be fitted. Thanks guys!

The HP is completely stock standard. Was thinking about possibly fitting a VCT exhaust, but I'm not sure the full system will fit. Also, if gain turns out to be only 4 odd flywheel kw, it would make more sense to go to Herrods and fit extractors and high flow cats etc. Would then be looking at 10+ flywheel kw's.

Its really not worth the trouble of fitting another stock exhaust. If youre going to do it, go aftermarket and get a good 2.5" system.

I was told repeatedly that my XR6 VCT engine was hand built. Twice from the salesman, and also from the service guys. I had no reason to doubt them, especially when the engine was very tight until 15,000 Kms, and my 24000 KM old Territory VERY loose. There was also something else I read that pointed in this direction also. I am most probably wrong, however I am known to stick to my guns.

My VCT has a 2.5 exhaust but with twin mufflers with twin 3 inch tips
This was fitted by the guy who originally owned it who had an exhaust shop

There is no drone whatsover and I am wondering if it's worth taking both mufflers off and putting on a lukey ultra flo muffler
Did read about losing power with exhaust mods on AUFalcon.com but I am wrapped with the performance of my car, especially in performance mode (it's an auto)

HP dude - what do you think of galaxy blue colour
besides cobalt blue, its my favourite falcon colour
Since the paint on my car has had heaps of TLC, it looks purple during cloudy days and dark purple at night under flouro's

They were not hand built engines , unfortunately. The 220 Kw and the 5.6L windsors were hand built in the AU2 and 3's but no I6 was....

Sorry but these guys were uninformed or being dishonest.

By the way your comment about the Terri convinces even more never to buy one, when the time comes to update and for some reason can't afford to get what I want I'll cram me and the family in a s/h TSeries which the engine will last a long long time.

Hi SVR73

I really like Galaxy and Cobalt Blue also. With our Galaxy Blue HP, in certain light, you see the faintest tinge of purple. It's a nice effect. Only difficulty is keeping it clean! And you see every imperfection. The HP is a keeper. I'll post photos of it and the XW asap (I did on the old FF.com FWIW).

I am planning on getting a Hot Chilli Red AU I XR8 (5 spd manual) with body kit and Tickford 17s, but that won't be for another year or two. I plan to fiddle with the motor, so mileage isn't so much of an issue, but originality is a must! I think the AU XRs in Red with bodykit and Tickford rims look absolutely fantastic. But that's just me!

Wouldn't both XR6 models have a similar exhaust?

You'd think so, but the HP came with a Forte exhaust. For EF-EL XR6, they ran a sports exhaust to get 164kw, but with the improvements to the IL6 from E-series to AU, plus the Tickford mods, they could keep the output at 164kw without needing to add the sport exhaust. Bit of a shame IMO. Would have been good to have the AU XR6HP produce a few more kw's than the E-Series XR6. But I think they wanted to keep a fair margin between HP and VCT, especially due to the VCT's weight disadvantage. They fitted sports exhaust to the XR6 VCT though, and like I said, that accounts for approximately 4 flywheel kw's.

Guys, you do realise that the XR6 HP and the XR6 VCT shared an identical stock header and cat? The only difference to the exhaust was from the cat back and, to be honest, was hardly a "sports exhaust". Personally I doubt the VCT's twin exhaust from the cat back made SFA difference. As for the VCT powered Ghia's, they had a slightly different set of stock headers that was made for silence. I think they were referred to as "sodium filled" or something similar. That would explain their loss of power.

In short, the VCT made more power in the engine, the exhaust itself had minimal if any effect on the overall power.

I actually didn't realise that. I thought the whole system was different. Thanks for clearing that up.

Don't suppose the setup would fit anyway, with the setup on the VCT built to fit around the IRS?

the extra power the VCT models had also had to carry the IRS set up compared to HP with lighter live axle

Cool so called exhaust experts????

why bother buying an original VCT exhaust $2500 Cat back system when you can get a Redback system for $450. Also only the end pipe is blocked off. The rest of the system ie: twin centre mufflers are there for a reason.

Does any body commenting actually own an au XR6 VCT. Seems most don't and think they are experts.

AU2 XR6 VCT owner, 2.5" Redback cat back exhaust. K&N panel filter, Tickford cold air intake.

Such a wild and brash statement for 1st post i must say......

There are 3 on the list I can see, a bit more homework on the subject on VCT engines here and you will see the difference.

Casper owns a VCT and he knows just about everything there there is to do with the VCT. What he doesn't know about it, its not worth knowing anyway. He is an expert. Some would say a Mr Know It All. Actually it's just me that thinks that :

Me, well i know nothing, except petrol is expensive and wheels go round and round.

I humbly appologize to those i've offended.

Just got a quote for an origonal VCT system. Not worth the money in my opinion. More than happy with 2.5" redback

I've got an 99 model AU1 XR6 VCT Auto. Has 56500klm on it. Original exhaust had rusted out when purchased 6mths ago.

Fitted a Redback 2.5" cat back mandrel system. Used a friends g-tech and recorded a 7.05s best to 100. Have now fitted Pacemaker 4480's extractors two months ago and have recorded a 6.77s best. Horsepower measurement using g-tech is 190rwhp.

Its quiet on the cruise and with a nice raspy tenor when up it.
NB Measured dB at 2800rpm using correct technique (1m at 45deg) is 83dB.
NBB Weighbridged it : 1680kg inc me 75kg, 5kg tools, 10L of fuel. ie 1590kg
