Default Whats Happening To the Aussie Accent??

I was in Subway today lunchtime getting some stuffing for my gut when i overheard the 3 young girls in front of me ordering their food.

i heard the word SORRY which sounded to me like Sar ry,
CAR sounded like COH or KHAoR ,

They threw in the word "LIKE" 4 times in a 3 word sentence (exaggerated)

We are going to a barstadised English American Paris Hiltonish accent which to be quite honest irritates but worries me at the same time.

Every time my boys throw in a "like" which isnt needed i give them a whack to the back of the head. They now know not to say it. The accent thank god hasnt been picked up yet.

Being from a wog background, id rather them saying maaate with a Greek accent than to sound like a brainless twat you see on America TV

Sorry, but i had to get it out

Maybe the 3 young girls WERE American, and you were thinking of whacking them over head for their accent!

Seriously, cant stand it myself either. I'm forever telling kids to stop saying this word or that word or stop copying the Americans. Or that's not what we say here in Oz.
Younguns dont have an identity that is australian, so they continually copy what they see on the net and tv. Bloody shame.

Things change, big deal.

The aussie accent is pretty nasty anyway, if its the old crocodile Dundee one you are talking about. Women sound like they are from a trailer park or something.

You HAVE to be kidding?

We're getting up on our high horse about people's accents now? Do you think that's soemthing that they can help?

They're kids. They use words including "like" and "y'know". They'll also grow out of it when they mature a bit more and realise how silly it sounds.

For all you know, these girls are university educated or working their way to a trade. But... you jump in and brand them brainless twats. Way to judge a book by it's cover champ.

This really is pathetic. Of all the petty moral crusades ive seen launched on these forums, this has to be the most pointless of them all.

So, in a similar vein, Subway is a very american franchise. You seem to be scared sh*tless of American culture, but you obviously support the americanisation of our food and ever increasing presence of fast food in our diets. But that's ok, because 'you know best', right???

See - i can jump to ridiculous conclusions as well.

hopefully were are learning to talk properrrrly (instead of lehning ta talk proply) I always didnt like a professional voice over at Channel 10 saying "Lawr'n'owda" when a professional voice over should be pronouncing his or her words properly, and say "Law and Order." It does take more effort.

Two things are killing the Aussie language:

Text messaging abbreviations and "The OC"

FUN FACT:

Did you know that OC stands for "Ostensibly Crap"

Did you also know Aaron Spelling came up with name 90210, after sending all 5 main stars to Mensa for IQ testing and that was their results. Jason Priestly got the 2.

Did you know that a recent poll conducted by US based research company AC Nielsen has revealed that indeed, nobody loves Raymond.

Finally, in another poll of 10 million American males it was revealed that 98.2% would not sleep with Paris Hilton.....Again.

"Americanisation" aside, not everyone out there has control over their accents. XWGS351 does make a valid but then there are the exceptions to the rule.
My 9yo brother is autistic and one of his particular mannerisms is to mimic certain words & phrases exactly as he has heard them, sometimes it's **** funny other times it's as annoying as can be. The problem with it is that he (along with many other people that live with autism) are "normal" in every other aspect, ie. appearance, behaviour etc etc., so people jump to the conclusion that the kid is either a smartarse or their parents did a shoddy job of bringing them up.

Next time you hear it (and not just over hear someone elses conversation) and this sort of speech bothers you so much, it's as simple as saying "excuse me, I couldn't quite understand that."

You should try ordering capsicum on your sub in America. They look at you as though you are speaking french. One rather loud african american woman behind the counter kindly offered; "It's green peppers sir, aint no such thing as capsica here".

Anyways, the americans are running around calling each other "mate" thanks to Steve Irwin. I think the language exchange is a two way street.

My Wife is a first generation Maltese Australian from the Eastern Suburbs of Sydney. She thinks the pseudo English nob accent is normal. (You know the one's who call their kids Conner and Flynn??)
Well she told me, 100% Aussie, when I met her that I talked like a "WOG"!?? WTF??
The last time I was annoyed by a bunch of YANKS way in Florence, Italy during the summer. The place was teeming with them and they sound like a bunch of whining cats who don't know how to have a private conversation.
PS: I think you will find that 90210 is the post (er.. ZIP) code for Beverley Hills, lol.

Also known as bell peppers as well if you are looking for them in the supermarket.

For the wife and I, it was in Orvieto (a little village about 80kms north of Rome) where we went to the old city for tea one night to a quaint little restaurant. They were loud and obnoxious and annoyed the hell out of us, and there were only 5 of them! Glad there wasn't a whole group. We walked out of there after an extremely wonderful meal shaking our heads at these yanks.

As much as it kills me to say this, Americans speak English how it should be spoken. They say thunder, we say thundah.
And if it sounds like a z in a word, generally is, ie realise vs realize.

I think you missed the point. I thought he was saying he was annoyed with aussies speaking the American style of the English language and using words they use instead of the Aussie style and/or aussie slang. Keep the Aussie style of the English language.
I bet if someone around you kept speaking to you in another language, you would be annoyed and tell them to shut up. I think alot of the American ways are crap and wrong, so why copy them. Dont lose the style/identity which makes us Aussies. Free speech already has limits, its called LAW. (slander)
