I just returned from a trip to South America, and witnessed several VE Commodores driving around Brazil (all in black) badged as Chevrolets. They're the only large sedan on offer over there, except for Merc/Beamers etc. They really stand out on the road because most Brazilians drive small hatchbacks.
Pre-dating the Australian VB Commodore, Brazil had earlier versions of the Opel Commodore, but called Chevrolet Commodoro (yes, suffixed with 'o', not 'e')... in sedan and fastback form. In Argentina, there are still plenty of updated XK Falcons driving around; utes, sedans and station wagons. They stopped making these only a few years ago, but the more recent versions had revised frontal styling, ghia badges, alloy wheels etc... a very eery looking car in its final Argentinian spec. I've got pics if anybody's interested. Another interesting model I saw in Argentina is a fastback version of the final Cortina (TF ?). Looked pretty good too. |

I just got back from South America as well, and saw the old XK's driving around everywhere in Argentina. The newest looking ones had tail lights from a TF Cortina, so I figured they stopped building them sometime in the 80's. The headlights looked like they were from an XD, or maybe TF cortina as well. The rear section of the roofline and rear windscreen on the sedans had been updated also. They look a lot different to our XK but the bodyside crease lines are unmistakable.
I'd post pics if I had them, hard drive crashed a few days after I got back, so I lost them... |

are they LHD or RHD in south america ? even with the current rego rules i think you can rego a 30 year old LHD car so a `79 compact falcon would be pretty cool.

Ok here are a few pics I googled, I saw millions of these in Argentina.
All left hand drive. I cant think of anything good about these cars. They are interesting to look at yes, but to my eyes they are downright ugly. |

that pic of the wagon is interesting actually, there are another 2 Falcons in the shot -obviously some kindof Argentinian Ford car show. As you'd expect these cars get modified and although the vast majority I saw were old wrecks, I did see a few immaculate ones getting around, as well as a few street machine style magazines with seriously hot examples on the cover. I wonder what they'd think of our Aussie Falcons...

Would have a good power to weight ratio with that chassis and 221 cid six.

Looks like they used a lot of cortina parts in their upgrades.Grills taillights etc.

I got a mate who had one of those "Cortina" coupes here in Perth.
It was a Ford Taunus GT from Germany.
