Default changing steering wheels

Hey Guys, trying to change my steering wheel but can't find the security bit for removing the airbag anywhere. Where can I buy 1? worst case does anyone have the Ford part number?

For the airbag security bolts, just use a flat blade screw driver and cut a small (2mm x 3mm) notch in the blade, and shape the width of the blade so it fits nicely into the bolt head. Works a treat.

Failing that, it's a 5 sided torx bit (also called torx plus - size 25 or 30, IIRC). You can get a set of them for around $30 from Repco, bursons, gasweld etc.

You will also need a standard 6 sided torx bit (big bugger -T-50 size, perhaps) to actually undo the steering wheel.

Yeah, I have 6 point torx bits, but have been more or less everywhere in Mackay and no one has or is even willing to order in the 5 point bits. Repco said they'd see what they could find so will see if they come back

I found it very hard to get the T5 bit when we did a mates steering wheel, ended up taking it to an auto elec who undid it just enough so we could drive it home then handwind the screws out.

The modified screwdriver works. The secret to getting them out is to put a fair amount of pressure on the screwdriver in towards the bolt, as you slowly (very slowly) turn the bolt anti-clockwise. If you try with a loose grip or too fast, you just end up snapping off the little tabs on the newly modified screwdriver blade.

Agree with you there! I've tried all the obvious place like Repco, Bursons etc here in Melb to no avail.

Not Repco. They only have 6 point Torx bits. Luckily the set has come in useful for other jobs eg taking seats & belts out to change carpet, bolting up BA sway bar to chassis rail etc. IIRC the right size 5-point bit for the steering wheel is $46 from Ford, so best to try other places first. I'll get one, one day, so I can fit the Momo wheel...

My bad. Trying to cut it short as I tend to run on. I meant I'll try to get one from somewhere other than Ford one day and hopefully pay a shipload less.

I searched on ebay a while back for one of these sets, but couldn't find anything! You wouldn't happen to remember who you bought it from?

Sorry Justin - no idea. I even went through my ebay feedback, but there's so many different car parts sellers on there, and the links to the bits I bought don't work.

Perhaps a call to Bayford parts would be the way to go - they seem to sell things fairly cheap.

It was "turb20" JC. I think we both got our sets from him at the same time?

I've got a bit se which has flat blade bits with the centre already cut out so I gave that a go last night. Worked great, on the left then I snapped about 6 of these bits on the right. Thanks Blackers, I didn't even think of Blackwoods, will try them today.

Thanks for your help guys, as i was checking out the link Whiskers provided when I had a call from Repco. They said they could get a kit for about $50, I gave him the ABW part number pictured and said I could get them for $28 so they said they'd match it. Stuffed if I was going to pay $50 for something I'd only use once.
