Default EA Fairmont Ghia

G'day guys,

I've been looking at an EA fairmont Ghia for a project. I have no pictures.

I just want to know your opinions on them.

It has an EB GT aero kit on it, lowered springs on the front, umm has rust in the rear guards (not much, but isnt it common on EA-EDs?), X drilled & slotted rotors all round, just needs a battery and o2 sensor to run. Umm, the clear coat has runs and the car has been keyed (but not fussed on paint as it'll be resprayed) fairly straight body, oem fairmont wheels (turboblades??).

He wants 1 grand with the GT kit....But I'm gonna offer him $500 cash.

Edit:- Forgot to add, it's 1990, 4 speed auto and 3.9 MPI. Plans will be a BA/BF IRS rear, 4V BA/BF V8 or Turbo current motor.

What yas rekon?

I would offer the $500 and see how you go. It sounds as though you are going to give her a huge make over, so what needs doing will be absorbed into that.

My eldest has an EA project here, we paid $300 for it with a buggered engine. So far we have taken a 4ltr and 4spd gear box from an EBII and done the transplant, should be turned over soon I hope ;)

So your figures sound about right I would think having the GT kit on it.

EA Fairmont Ghias are great cars. It'll be a series 2, so most of the problems of the early EAs were fixed by then. They're a great base as they've got full electrics, and parts from later models are pretty much bolt-up. It sounds like the car is going to be overhauled anyway, so the usual checks, that the gearbox shifts smoothly etc. won't really apply here. Check all the power windows work properly, as they are prone to fail on e-series and are quite expensive to replace. Overall though, you can't go wrong with one.

Fitting a Boss V8 would be a ridiculously expensive proposition - not to mention the fact that it would be very nose heavy.

The weight and cost of IRS would also outweigh (no pun intended) any benefits handling wise. E-series Falcons handle fairly well for a car of their size and pedigree (read family hack), as long as the suspension is well sorted.

If you want a quad cam V8, forget the iron block ford motors. They are too heavy, too big and very expensive to buy.

Look into a 1UZ-FE Lexus V8. One of the best engines ever made.

I've seen one in a EB before, so it can be done.

Yeah, I've seen a lexus V8 in an EA Wagon before. Apprently it's a straight bolt up!

Dont take my post the wrong way, I wasn't trying to dampen your enthusiasm, but there's a practical limit to what you can do.

The turbo I6 is a proven method for power, relatively affordable, and won't require much work compared to the other options.

Quadcam lexus would be interesting though! :evil3:
