Default Vic Floods

Not as bad as SE QLD but seems the central & western districts are copping it.

Ballarat, Beufort, Creswick, Halls Gap, Clunes are all flooding as are many more. Halls Gap apparently being evacuated as are some parts of Ballarat.

Going to be a mess when I get home :(

Driving to work today up Derrimut road, there was more water on the road than I have seen since moving to the area. I went around most of it, p*ss funny watching the commodore behind me plough through it putting silty water all over his car and in through the grill :P

Its been raining fairly consistanty here in Upper Ferntree Gully in the eastern burbs. Fortunallty it hasn't been really heavy. BoM says we have only had about 24mm in the last 24hrs. Hoping everything will be OK over in the west of the state.

on the upside, those areas that RG mentioned, once the rains abates, get your metal detectors (even pans, a good school holiday activity) out look for some gold in or around the creek beds, and with caution!

Amen to that. The other morning when I went to close the gate I looked down and there was a chunk of gold. I found another chunk a few weeks back in the creek. A couple of big old gums have fallen in the top paddock and I plan on taking the detector up there when things dry out.

Yeh all those places were gold rich in the 1850's - 1890's

One of my ancectors from Ireland started the vic gold rush in clunes & ended up getting supplies & fighting alongside Peter Laylor as his luetenant in the Eureka stockage then helpling the both of them escape to GEELONG.
Naturally he wasn't talked about in the movies that followed, but 4 years after the revolution when they were pardoned he was the carrier of a flag ahead of the march at Ballarrat to commemorate the victims & celebrate there hard fought rights . At least there was an eyewitness that wrote about him & knew he was the gold discovery that started the gold rush in clunes & then went to Ballarrat, his name is JAMES WILLIAM ESMOND.
it is a long story but a true one

that is a new one on me mate,?....... the other Esmondes with an E went to Canada & America, Esmonde is originally normans from flanders THAT CAME OVER WITH WILLIAM THE BASTARD to conquer ENGLAND there the ones they call the Royal Esmonde's that are in the peerage books that are his very old ancestors that had the WEXFORD CASTLE in wexford IRELAND that still stands today as a living history museum & botanical gardens.
For some reason his family took away the E in there sirname. maybe that had a feud as his father was a tenant on the Barron & Sir Esmonde's land in Ireland.

In Rushworth central victoria there is ESMONDE STREET after my side of the esmonde's......... the royal Esmonde's my GGF married a daughter of TOMAS ESMONDE that street was named after him when he & his wife were living in RUSHWORTH He died there & is in the cementary.

I live in GOORNONG & the rain has been crazy, instead of cold rain warm rain was hitting me as i was looking at the side open drains filling up fast the other day, & the humidity was unbearable to breath outside, if this is Queensland weather they can have it.

righty oh, sorry you can not make the cruise night, were you leaving later?

that is a big list of road closuers that is only from the rian we got on the western side of this depression, we still will be getting rain & floods from the eastern one to come that is in NSW now.

We might need the SES blokes that went to queensland the other week to come back & save us.???? The Loddon & Campaspe rivers are rising fast.

Unfortunately that list isn't comprehensive enough up in this region, thankfully the rain has stopped and a lot of the roads are clearing... Still absolutely minimal compared to our counterparts in QLD. Feeling for them, can't even begin to comprehend the extent of what they are going through.

Does anyone know anything about Great Western? I heard they were being evacuated, just wondering if anyone has some info on the area?

No I actually grow their fruit! Way across in Heathcote region. We are inundated with water, but not nearly as bad as across there. The murmors we got were that the vineyard across at GW was under, but they must all be false!

what i heard later in the day was that they might not stay there & could have to find another spot because as you say GWW was getting threatened with water as was the township.

There you go. Also a bit of knowledge it only became a lake when the quarry struck a natural spring. Beautiful clear water and a heap of machinery at the bottom, including an old crane in the centre that you can stand on and be only chest deep in the water. Awesome swimming hole.
