Default What Moter To Use ?

What is a strong 4 cyl like pinto but newer, hi tec ? cant be a east west moter, turbo would be ok computer inj Whats the ford equlivent to a rb30?
, this would be used with tran's to re power my 59 van.. any thoughts apart from cortina [to old] :

Silvertop or blacktop ZETEC motors 1.8L or 2.0L. Google "escort zetec" and go through the results. Can be adapted for RWD.

Thanks ... if u run a air con + p/s will that make them a bit gutless or being hi-tec do they cope.. i am used to old school ! Cheers

I am not a Nissan fan but a good versatile motor to use is the sr20de or sr2odet lots of parts are available for these.
I know it's not Ford but Cosworths are like gold these days.

Yep +1 to a SR20DET, they have been put into pretty much every chassis known to mankind these days. They are cheap reliable and make good power, and they are light.

Would not bother with a Ford 4 cylinder, their are cheaper alternatives. Vote 1 for NIssan SR20DET, Toyota 4A-GE or Nissan CA18DET. Personally I love the 4A-GE's, nothing like revving out to over 8k.

An RB30 is an in-line straight 6........... so that question of what is fords equivalent is easily answered : But I'm guessing you want an I4 ?

SR20 is quite bulky, a very tight squeeze in a Mk1 Escort and I imagine a 59 Prefect/Escort van engine bay would be smaller again. I'd be starting by looking at a Toyota 4AGE or Ford/Mazda 4cyl from TX3 - or ideally an MX5, rwd already.

What ever you choose - just make sure it has a turbo

Will make up for all the lack of cubes you can imagine

I won't suggest a Turbo Rotary as that may scare a few too many people, but I would suggest the SR20DET with a nice little T04Z turbo hanging off the side

Will make more power and torque than you will know what to do with !!!

Yep, the Nissan SR20's are bulky, but they're cheap and easy to install when condisreing a RWD format. My other bent in life is toyota products, so consider:

4AG Series - 1.6L NA and factory supercharged units, becoming harder to find good cheap motors these days, as they are quite old now, lots of aftermarket support for them too. FWD and RWD format, but all the "good stuff" is FWD, so you'll need to convert to RWD

3S Series - 2.0L NA and factory turbocharged, can make outstanding power and are a good overall unit, lots of different evolutions of 3S out there, so do your homework before you purchase. FWD and RWD format and also East/West and North/South configurations. here's a pic of a Toyota Altezza 3SGE BEAMS Motor I installed into a 1977 Celica:



Anything Toyota produced later than the models listed above are still quite expensive, so probably not worth considering. There are also a gammit of 6 cylinder engines that will push your old tin around extremely effectively too!

Very nice Celica! emails some pics to the Fast 4's guys when it's finished

Best bet for that lil Van would be either a 4AGE, CA18DET, Mazda BPT(TX3's etc) or a Pinto 2L which has been warmed over a little bit. These engines are all relatively the same size

The SR is phyically too big and it would be a huge amount of work to fit into the car.

is it goin to be legally registered for road use ????
BEFORE choosing any motor i would consult relevant aurthorities as to wat u can or cant fit first
then on their recomendations work from there
to many people spend lotsa $$$$ to be told "no go"
then decide multi carb or efi ???
have seen 18rg twin cam toyota scream to 8,000 revs and pull 15 sec quarters in rt104 corona (no nos,no turbo,no water injection )just worked with twin carb
seems slow nowadays (was 15 odd years ago)but vn ss commodore owners around town (at the time )wouldnt try twice
how big is your wallet ???

Then they'll cry when Ford start using a Ford V6 in a Falcon.....
