How many kms should be on a new car at delivery?

Just want your thoughts, when we picked up our new g6et a week ago it had 54kms on it when I asked the sales guy why so high he said every now and then they take one of the assembly and run it on the test track and this one must have had that done to it. then he said when it got here it had 52kms on it and we put 2 on it. I reckon he is full of **** and they have put the ks on it what do you guys think?

Well that's your opinion but whatever, we have the car now so there is no plan to go back to the dealer and question him. I am just asking what you guys think is a fair amount of ks for a new car. If you have ever driven one of these cars you can see the attraction for going out for a thrash.

The salesman is correct. Cars are picked at random and generally do 40 to 50km but I've seen a territory with 90km on it as it come of the truck from the factory. All these cars come with a sticker on the window that states how many km driven but these would be removed at pre delivery. We started sticking these stickers in the paperwork that went with the car as a few customers questioned the km.

If your car is an early production build then expect up to 80kms along the hume.

I read somewhere that if it is less than 100km, in some case they can reset it once back to 0ish

pending on the state also in some cases they don't truck them to the interstate delivery yard to holding yard

quite often over here in perth see them driven in convoy from the ports storage yard in fremantle up to holding yards in kewdale with the front one having a dealer plate a few in the middle and the rear one having the other plate

I would imagine that in some cases it may be necessary to drive with trade plates from dealer x to dealer y if the vehicle is out of stock at one and needed at another or to other workshops if non dealer accessories need to be fitted ?

oh and then there is if that car was allocated to one state but ends up sold to another

eg the only make so many in that colour engine so on and ... so dealers with common out put will get preference but if you go in and say you want one filling that vehicles criteria they have to negotiate with that dealer (like a footy teem trying to get a player at pic time) to get it even tho you may not buy it so could also rack up a few more k's in this instance too

be happy with what you got @ only 54ks I recon

Spot on Mik. Can't recall how many mine came with, but the local dealer sourced one in WA, had it shipped across, and specc'd to my requirements.
May have been 40 odd km.

A mate had a car delivered from an out of town dealer. When the car arrived at his house, the street was a bit narrow, so the truck parked on the main road, and drove in a couple of blocks.
My mates reaction was the same as yours; "I hope you didn't drive it all the way!!"

Ive only purchased 1 new ford and it had around 13-15 km on the clock,i live in perth wa.
It was ordered from the factory specifically for me.
Both of our new lancers had around 15- 20ish km on them at delivery.
That's my experience with new cars
I also know not to believe a word that comes out of a car salesman's mouth,they say anything to get your money and get you out the door lol

I've had lots of new cars and have seen readings of 8km up to 80km

Its still got full factory warranty so not too much to worry about imo,i regularly see brand new cars with the protective panel stickers driving in convoy along leach hwy coming from fremantle,mostly jap cars though,who knows how many km they have at delivery?

Not anymore, a Holden dealer in Qld was taken to court over it.

My three new cars have all had 9-14 km when picked up although it isn't uncommon for new cars to have up to 100 km on them ie factory testing or dealership driving it to get accessories, towbar or tinted windows etc

yep theres another area they can have k's put on them having accessories fitted towbar or tinted windows etc some dealerships wont do some things in house and will drive the vehicle to the point of fitting (or multiple points for fitting) of extras asked for prier to delivery

Mine had between 13-16km from memory

Trust me, dealerships really don't get that excited by your new car that they want to take it for a run.

Just been informed by my boss,wife that our 2014 ralliart lancer had between 3-4 km on it at delivery,it was the only new car we got with absolutely no damage at all,a proper new car lol

as far as im aware
they have to hold the as a demo for a minimum time/k's

and it use to be a scaled payment from the maker the longer/more k's on them

but as far as I was also aware as long as its been added to the dealerships records as a demo there is no limit till becoming second hand just stays demo but the longer the harder to get rid of it at a fair price
a demo can be used for anything in the dealership where as one with dealer plates is very short for what it can be used for

cant tell you much on factory demos either

A while back I took a new car for test drive with trade plates on, I'd reckon I must have put at least 20 Kilometers on the clock.

I’ve had a couple of dozen new cars from various manufacturers delivered to dealers in the bush and most while living in Sydney and the kms vary greatly depending on the background of the vehicle.

Some are a factory stock delivery and I’ve notice anything from 15 to 50 for these.

Some cars have tint applied or a sunroof fitted and suspension mods prior to pick up from the dealer and of cause in some cases the work was outsourced and required the vehicles to be moved to and from different locations.

The highest was in the 80km range for a car that had a cam swap & the heads ported and exhaust fitted before the dealer delivery.

I’m silly about the cars and do a thorough visual check before I’ll accept one and as long as it’s in good condition then I don’t worry about the mileage and would see 54km as a being no more than a little on the high average side for a stock vehicle.

My FG had 53 kms on the clock from new. It had to be driven from the sister dealership 35 kms away.

I worked for a new car franchise back in the early 80's. It's sister dealership was nearly 50kms away, so management used to disconnect the speedo's whenever new vehicles were being transferred between dealerships. Same deal when accessories were being fitted by outside suppliers same distance away. Some of those cars had well over 150 clicks on them before they were delivered yet only showed 15 or so.

Got my XR8 with 76km on it. I got the sticker where it talks about testing, but nothing was filled in on it. Seems to be common for the XR8's to have a few kms on them.

And I don't think they were too worried about driving mine, because they had an ex-media XR8 there that was getting a workout by the local Sergeant!

when i worked in PD at ford, the guys would take it for a 10km drive to double check everything was tight, also some subcontract their tint, detailing etc, or their delivery yard is a distance from the actual dealership aswell.

There is a lot of factors into the KM on a car when purchased new.

Anything up to 100 km is acceptable ive found.

Most dealerships are pretty good and will try and keep them as low as possible. Ford do test a fair amount out of each batch, and as above do fit a sticker to the windscreen. Most dealers remove these stickers and throw them away.
