Running on Empty

Just bought myself a copy of the classic 1982 Australian movie Running on Empty. This has got to be the origianl Fast and Furious where older guys like me did not grow up with Gran Turismo. This was made just after Mad Max 2 was released (1980). Anyone who hasn't seen it or knows about it, I recommend you get a copy and watch some classic Australian and American muscle get destroyed. Here are some screen grabs to wet your appetite or to reminisce and say "yeah I remenber the black Dodge and 57 Chev"

Mate this is an Australian classic & every parent should make there children appreiciate Australian's film heritage, my 14 year old loves this film

If I remember correctly - if you look carefully just as the Monaro lands, the bonnet flys off and you see the six cylinder sitting there. Also look at the two photos of the red GT above - the shaker is sitting at different heights.

I'm being picky but yes I'm another big fan of this movie.

i live just down the road from where tony's house was at dolls point.

its also funny in the last race when you realise that its at port botany/la parouse.

i think i got my dvd copy from jb hifi a couple of years ago. it's a had to have type of movie.

This movie enspired me to build a blown engine for my xagt & 15 years later its the cover car in street fords mag.

This is an Australian master piece & should be a question in the citizen test.

Ha, i seen this before F&F was released...Spotto a 57 chev. great movie, nice cars, wierd folk, total australian.

Bite your tongue! You've got to appreciate a classic, regardless of the badge on it. The 57's were a credit to their era. But anyway, both the XY and the Chev were the highlights of the movie ... BOTH! :

A great simple classic Australian film, I think half the fun in older movies like this is picking the inconsistencies. Such as when the XY rolls of the back of the truck it is a AUTO not toploader, different slotters, no GT badge etc... Every time I watch it, it makes me want to dust of my XY and go cruising.

How funny was that red rebodied xy replica when its on its side after the truck makes it a convertable and you get a 1 second glimpse of a single exhaust system.
Another classic is Midnite Spares, also aussie, and on dvd for around 12 bucks...

Nah mate, Midnite Spares was made around the same time as R.O.E.
Features Bruce Spence and Max Cullen (The blind fella from R.O.E.).
Has a car chase at the end with a XA GT Hardtop and a P76.

The Challenger from ROE still gets around in it's full movie spec.
It is a genuine R/T 440 6-pack. I believe it now lives in QLD and of course the
No. plates read "FOX 1".

Thanks, what is the movie with the silver Charger. Must have been late 80's or early 90's when it was released. I recall there was race/drag scene in a train yard.

That Dodge from R.O.E was always one of my favourite ever since I saw that movie in good old VHS back in 1983.
