Formula 1 - interest you?

Hi FF.
Just stumbled across reading how Hamilton might go to Ferrari and Vettel not contracted etc.

Got me thinking as I LOVE cars - but can't remember the last time I watched a F1 race, or even interested in it.

The money given to the driver's is absolutely massive and how much put in by Manufacturers to run their teams, so there must be huge following somewhere!

However I literally know not one person who follows F1 with any passion. A little for Ricciardo but not the competition itself.

How about yourself and network of family and friends?

My wife and I are both into it. The awesome racing is in the mid-field though, with a lot of up and coming talent. The new cars aren't as exciting as the older V12/V10/V8 engines, but you have to request they are at the pinnacle of performance at the moment.

Always been a Ferrari fan, but don't think much of Leclerc (spoilt brat comes to mind), Vettel was ok but his heart hasn't been in it for a few years now. Mercedes are clinical (just like everything German), and Hamilton thinks he's a God. He's a good driver, but the other half of the equation is that he's in the best car at the moment, backed by a team with an unlimited budget.

Looking forward to see what Sainz can achieve in the next 2 years, and how Ricciardo will fair at McLaren.

Watch a couple of race weekends, won't take you long to get back into it (I lost interest for a few years when the cars went Hybrid, but now back into it). Also worth watching are the Drive to Survive Netflix series.

Please don't think I'm knocking the sport just I've never known anyone passionate about it (I'm 39) but the money and technology is amazing!!

NASCAR definitely doesn't it do anything for me but obviously does for millions....be a boring world if all loved the same things hey

Loved to follow it back in the 80's but has become very ordinary like Supercars.

See that's where it's interesting.

I know quite a few that love Supercars and are right into it. (like BBQs before race etc)

Yet they don't follow F1 at all hence got me thinking

If you have Netflix watch “Drive to Survive”. Doco tv series about f1 over 2018 and 2019. Very good behind the scenes of most of the f1 teams as the year goes by.

Yep was mentioned earlier so will do.

I enjoy the stories the "The Fastest Car" series which is only street cars. Some is silly but I like it.

I don't like F1 but Drive to Survive is the best series on Netflix - I don't follow any of the racing what so ever I just like the Netflix series that covers all the behind the scenes stuff around the racing, its fascinating.

It's always been several degrees of separation unrelatable to what I was driving, so I never developed the interest. The tech angle is amazing, no doubt it is the pinnacle of how fast humans can drive cars etc...

Being an Enthusiast racing went hand in hand to me....shruggs shoulder.
Been following F1 from way back, my network I know following are from family/friends and those friends I've met here as posted above re the threads here.
Technology hits F1 way ahead of our cars, its a given, has changed the game quickly.
Sure is not like it used to be but thats progress as they say.
There isn't many motor sports havign a variety of winners, the cream always bubbles to the top and thats normally no more than 2 teams, a third may snare the surprise now and then.
I'm sure there is 99.9% of Nascars supporters who couldn't care one bit about F1 like those mates of yours quoted, such is life.
Your mates missed the better days for the last number of years its near on Nascar meh but I keep following it for its in my DNA.

Yes the separation is madness/amazing unFN believeable - pilots mm's from disaster

I wasn't a NASCAR fan until there was nothing else on the Tele.
Watching it after a while I learned to appreciate it.
Watching them lap after lap working on getting underneath the car in front and removing their air making there car light? It's a real talent.
But you've got to take the time to watch.
I'm hooked now.

Formula 1 has got boring and to many big head drivers, give me the F1 cars of the 70s and 80s with massive rear tyres.

Superstars are boring , I used to like the braking duels into Murray's corner! Not now!

F1 is my favourite sport but I have mixed feelings about "Drive to Survive" The fake sounds including crashes, engines, wheelspin etc. Plus the fake commentary and Will "Annoying" Buxton ****s me to no end!!!

But good publicity I guess....

Started watching it in the mid 90s, around the time of williams-renault and Jacques Villeneuve.
Probably watched every race since about 97 or 98 (when McLaren and Hakkinen won the champ) up until to about 2005 when bored of ferrari and schumacher.

I got bored with it mid 2000s and only started watching again around 2011. With nothing to do and no money it was something to look forward too until this year. Hard to get a free stream for much of the motor sports no longer no longer on free tv, but can always find a F1 stream, and sometimes a moto gp stream.

Yeah I think the sheer dfifference in reality makes it different (for good or bad!)

I'm late to the F1 party but I'm a massive Dan fan.

Bloke is a joker and can pull off some beautiful moves. I was devastated at Monaco when they totally ****ed it up in the pits in 2016.

But he came back even with a crippled car to win it in 2018 and it was so sweet

Hi all,
Not related to cars but can anyone remember ON ANY SUNDAY.
1970's documentary about motorcycles.
Jumping over great big sand hills on bikes with hardly any suspension, pure magic.
I raced dirt bikes in the 70's to 96, rough, no suspension, now I ride a Yamaha WR450F.
Wow what a difference!
Just lovely getting out in the bush and having a ball till you almost **** yourself and then you think I better back off now!
I think I'll go for a ride on Sunday!

Supertrucks on the other hand is great along with vintage racing locally.

Was a huge fan of NASCAR and Indy car, every US memorial day (25th May) I would watch it live on FTA TV back then.
One year I remember watching the drier trucks constantly running around the track trying to dry the surface. Everytime they got it up to ready to race, down came the rain again.
Sat there for about 3 hours thinking it would start eventually but that year it was cancelled.
Wussy Yanks don't do rain.

Still enjoy NASCAR Talledaga.

I remember going to Liverpool speedway in the 70's and I saw a young yanky rider clean up.
I have always thought it was Greg Hancock, but that would make him about 7 at the time!

I'm an F1 tragic! I've been that way since I was about 7 or 8, always followed Williams through thick and thin.

Used to be into the V8s from the Seton days up until the COTF concept. That totally ejected any interest I had. I see it as basically our version of NASCAR which I loathe.

Indycars are getting that cool factor back, not to the level they had in the 90s but getting there.

The new WEC plans sound cool. Not sure what effects Covid19 will have on manufacturer interest though especially the hypercar concept.

I've got a bunch of friends who like F1 (many though are not Aussies), not as much as I do, but plenty enough to discuss regulation changes, driver market, technical personnel changes. I've even gotten a few interested by simply playing the F1 codemasters games (even though they are pretty rubbish) with casual car people.

Really though us Aussies are obsessed with AFL or a version of Rugby. Motorsport even though much larger worldwide is forced to take a back seat. Since having lived and worked overseas I actually find the oblong ball games quite boring and mindless now that I moved back (I used to be a die hard Broncos fan in my youth).

Dick Burleson (King Richard) raced in Australia and I bought his blue Bell Moto3 from Penrith Husqvarna.
He had a pin head and it wouldn't fit my head, I sold it onto my mate.
I've had Kawasaki 75, XR75, 125 and 250 Honda Elsinores, Yamaha YZ, Honda SL125, Yamaha dt250, Yamaha it175, husqvarna CR250, CB750 four, Miaco 490, Honda CBR1000RR and now a Yamaha WR450F.
I bought an ex. works Husqvarna CR430 from Motorad in Lithgow in 1979? and broke my shoulder blade and collar bone on a casual ride near the upper Colo.
What are some of those bikes be worth now!
I still have a blue Moto3, Husqvarna nylons, jumper and casual jacket, all five times to small.

F1 hasn't done itself any favours with audiences going to almost entirely to payTV. If the top drivers didn't make the big bucks, then the millions of dollars they are paid per year would go into the pockets of people like (previously) Bernie Ecclestone and now the Liberty media group and soon to be Disney(!)
