ok guys I want to build a car. It has been something i've yearned for for some 10yrs now. I'm a rev head at heart and doesn't look like I can kick the trait.
So I want to start here by getting suggestions on to what car from 1975 (my year of birth) I could build from the bottom up. Which car would have the most parts available? I'm not very mechanically minded but I want to learn and doing this is the only way to learn me thinks :evil3: I know a few things about motors so I'm not going in blind. I have a carport space to spare and a shed to fill up with crap so lets bring on my new hobby  So suggestions on car models to go with? I do like the coupes but I'm thinking perhaps a little too pricey for a first time project. what do ya reckon?

Well, if its 1975 this would lean to the XB I guess, plenty of parts around and still a few semi-unmolested originals around. LIKE THIS

As AUlien said you will be lookinfg at a XB if you are going down the Falcon's road .Try looking for a pano as it is a coupe with a big boot at the end of the day .

I don't mind the falcons, escort... escort would probably be something I could handle more so on my own..due to size. lol
panel vans, haven't seen an xb around for many years... off to do a search.

Oooh, that ute could really get pimpin! Seriously though, If I were going for a '75 model specifically, I would probably look for a 4.1 Cortina. Falcon's are a little bit more common, and a Cortina could be a bit more 'individual', and break you apart from the crowd.
That said, it really is an individual choice. Some might suggest an esky, but they are a bit small for me, while I might be happy with a P5 LTD, they may be too big for some.

gemibabe, i was also born in 75.
If i wanted to do a build on a ride from the same year that i was born, i would definitely be going for a ZG Fairlane. I have owned one in the past and fully regret selling it. I'm only 53kg but i love big car's. I had no trouble handling the Lane. You obviously want something a bit smaller though. The Escort is a great little car to work on. is that ute the same as a datsan ute? they look similar.
cortina's are cool too as are the capri's. would love to do a shelby, but I think I should start small. I'm going to hunt for 1975 models and see whats on offer out there.

my dad had a zh fairlane. I loved that old big tank. they look great all pimped out but too heavy I reckon.

I SAY the mighty FORD CORTINA.
I had one with 4.1L 250 xflow, 4 speed box (mine had a celica 5 speed), LSD, extractors,pedders lowered springs, etc. very quick car indeed. Selling my NAUGHTY CORTY is one of lifes regrets for me. Parts are really cheap, available at every wrecker, and once the beast is finished will be a seriously reliable machine. Good luck but most importantly, DONT RUSH and have fun. |

Steer clear of the Geminis, they're just a rebadged Isuzu tin can. I backed into one once in a HQ van from 3 feet away and managed to put the tin cans rear bumper on the drivers side roughly level with the bottom of it's rear window; my van had so little damage that it took me 3 days to find it. If you want a weekend pocket rocket consider a RX3 Mazda as a starting point.

I know I’m going to be biased on this but i would go for a Cortina or a Capri.
Parts are pretty cheap and there's a massive range of engines you can get for both of these, again is comes down to how much you want to spend. You can also get Cortina's in 2doors, there not many around but you can find em out there and there something really different. Also the Cortina is another plus if you want a smaller car with a V8 as the RTA haven’t' cracked down on putting 5Ltr's in these yet. Anyway, good luck with what ever car you choose.

What about a toyota ta22 celica there a coupe & you can do far bit of mods etc different eng/g/box etc....what ever you decide on the biggest battle will be finding a car without rust...

I had a '73 Celica convertible years ago, a bloke I knew had the 75 model convertible, but he had the supercharged engine, with a modified 9 inch diff.
That was a fun car!

Another vote for the Corty
I had one back in the day but it was a '72, what a weapon that was even in standard form. They are small enough but have enough room to move for some great mods. There are still a few getting around that are clean enough to be totally done too. |
