Yeah mine used to do that but I'm damn sure it wasn't the cars fault!

Sounds like a faulty Fuel sender in the tank, and while your in there, do the pump as well if it's done a few km's.
There was a Ford tech Bulletin about the problem.

mine had the samish problem. would read full then after a few secs drop to zero. took it to ford and they fixed it. think it was a relay type(had lots, 5 or so connections) plug under the dash near the steering arm/colum. noticed it was unpluged when i took it in and now it's plugged and got zippy ties to keep it together

could also be a dodgy wire. i'm having the same problem in my patrol ute at the moment. wiggle the plug and it's ok for a while, then goes to crap again...worth a try i guess..

Cost me around $300 including a new fuel pump and sender.
It's a pain of a job as either you take the fuel tank out from below. or you take the tray liner out and get it from the top !

Atm fuel gauge and pump are working. sometimes it plays up.
$300 for pump and sender gee thats good . u do the job yourself for that price?
i was quoted $300 for just the sender. thats coming in from under tub.
gotta lower the diff take off exhaust and lower the tank.
see how i go may leave it for a while yet

It would be FAR easier to remove the tub liner and go in from the top.
