Default thinking of buying XR5 - Should i wait for the new model?

hi, just wondering what you guys think.

im pondering with the idea of buying the Focus XR5 but i know the new model
is just around the corner.
the car would be leased therefore im worried about depreciation.

just wanted to get your opinions on this.

Hey Bruster,

you cant order an XR5 any more. The only ones left are dealer stock - not sure how many left.

If you are refering to the new 2.0 EcoBoost ST, there is no ETA yet as to when/if AUS will receive it. My suggestion it to get one now, or alternatively buy the Blue RS from Power ford.

yeah, i know the ones left are dealer stock.
this is why im in two minds of getting one.

do i get one now the last of the current shape and 2010 model

or do i wait for the new XR coming end of 2011 or 2012.

if i buy the current shape which i love by the way, im unsure if its a good idea getting a lease on this particular car.

if get a VW GTI for example i know they will be around for a few years so there is no danger of losing massing depreciation on the assumption a new model is around the corner. But then again i cant afford a GTI after options that car goes above $50k

IMO the new Focus wont hurt XR5 values, others in the range maybe. The new focus looks to be a great bit of kit but IMO it wont have the character of the 5 potter volvo in the current model

This is true. And i agree with you.

But to me it will be awesum because im an enthusiast. As someone who really doesnt care about the car and puts their financial situation first - ie, looking at it from a financial perspective - your gonna loose out big time and depreciation is an issue.

I would hold out. As youve said, the Xr5 is at the end of its Model Life and is being replaced shortly. i would say that you stand to loose less by purchasing the next model. But thats just my opinion.

Yep agreed it might loose lose a little when the new car is released but i dont think it will be much.
Yeah sure the 5 is finished doesnt mean it will lose value.

All i can say is the new ST has some BIG shoes to fill

The new ST doesn't interest me at all, it doesn't have the unique 5 pot engine.

To the OP, it depends if you want one due to the engine or whether you're happy to wait for the 4 pot.

Dealers are offering big discounts on the runout XR5 and existing owners have an obvious bias in favour of their cars. One site has discounts of about $6000 off RRP
Plenty of Mods around for the old model if that is your thing.
The real question is whether you can wait that long for the new 4 cylinder screamer.

i've decided to take a chance and visit my local dealer
im going to see what i get for trade in on my current car
and hope for the best.

i do believe XR5 is more unique probably more so than GTI, megane,mazda3 and so on.... so im sure when it comes time to sell hopefully it wont be a problem...like my current car.

wish me luck... i'll see what happens this weekend.

yep i too would say the current Focus with the volvo 5 pot is going to take some beating... you'll not lose out greatly on value either. 2006 models are selling for 50% of their original price, which is pretty good in terms of resale...

Another way of looking at it is that the XR5 is not likely to be 'replaced', certainly not the badge. If the new Focus is a 4 cylinder, it will likely be an XR4? Unless Ford break the convention and keep the '5' badge for some reason.

Sure, the LV models will depreciate, but that happens to all cars. Even cars that aren't replaced, like the Cougar, depreciated quite quickly. But there are different reasons behind that!

I'll say this though - I was in a similar position to you a couple of weeks ago, went to the dealer, thought it would be harmless and now I'm about to pick my XR5 up!

I think I read somewhere recently that Ford are retaining the XR5 nomenclature despite dropping a cylinder. Maybe it will refer to 5 seats instead.

I'm also thinking of buying a runout LV XR5. I'm not too worried about the depreciation as I believe the fact that its the last of the 5 pot may keep some of the enthusiest market. I just dont know whether I want to keep my BA or not (I like my V8s and a 3V XT is rare)

BTW the runout price is roughly 6G cheaper than RRP (so I was told by the dealer I visited). 33 something driveaway compared to 37 something plus on-roads. 2G more for leather (which I want)

if they do drop the 'XR5' the only thing that should replace it is 'ST'. No reason to keep the XR5 badge seeing as though they are no longer going to be a 5 cylinder

If thats aimed at me dont worry I'm not worried about XR5 resale I mean they are still asking high 20s to low 30s for second hand LVs with 70000kms on them

Believe me it's not the future value of the BA i'm keeping it for, it will never be worth anything (not that that is what you were suggesting either). It's the V8 rarity factor. It still gets looks when people hear the V8 note but are surprised it's coming from a basically bog stock looking XT.

And I'm with you entheos, the next one should be either the ST or some other name. The XR5 moniker should be dropped.

i don't follow that dallas?? logic (does ford know the meaning of this word anyway?) would dictate it should be called XR4t seeing as they let the ST moniker go with the LR... even if they bring out a hot hatch fiesta and call it an XR4t as well, it'll be no different to having both the XR5 focii & mondy...

It should be called the XR4 Turbo. It has always been based off the powerplant.

Yeah XR4T name could be used and yeah it would be the same as using XR5 on Focii and Mondy as it could be applied to both Focus and Fez, read: if the Fez does happen.
To me it just seems the right option to keep it badged as an ST, its badged that way everywhere else the XR5 should have always been known as the ST IMVHO but FoA seen it fit to try and fit it in with the XR moniker.

This is partially true.

I can only speculate as to why they called it the XR5T, but i do know that they had a very hard time selling the ST170 back when it was launched.

The moniker was not know in the AUS market so it did not respond so well. I believe that this is one of the reasons why Ford AUS was so Reluctant to bring in the Focus AND Fiesta ST.

But by rebranding the cars to a moniker known to the local market they ensured that the targeted demographic where not skeptical about the car and what it was when purchasing.

If you go up to a falcon owner and say i own a focus ST - 9 times out of 10 they wont know what your talking about, say to them you own an XR5T they will know its a ford performance enhanced vehicle.

But at the end of the day, your not gonna say no to buying a performance car if you love it just because the name isnt ST or isnt Xr5T.

You answered your own question, they named it XR (XR Branding falls inline with XR6/8) and 5 Turbo because it has 5 cylinders and its Turbo.
I can see your point with the ST badging though. And see why FoA named it the way they did
