Yeah, we still have a long way to go in order to help third world countries in reducing infant mortality, life expectancy and provision of health and medical supplies. A large portion of the world unfortuanely is developing countries, and if we can help them up to speed, that number might go up a bit.

I think over-population is a problem.
Contraception needs to be practiced in many poor regions where parents have 8 children and many of them due due to malnourishment, dehydration or illness. That way, we'd have the same number of resources for less people. China is an example. 1 child policy and they're emerging as THE world's superpower. Life expectancy means nothing though. I remember watching the news where an older lady turned like 105. She said she never smoked or drank. Ok...smoking...fine. But drinking? The fact remains that you will die one day anyway, regardless of what you do or don't do. I love a drink here and there...just in good moderation (and quality too --no CUB garbage for me!). My rule is live life to the fullest moderation. |

Interesting.
Not so long ago people were dying from the common cold or scratches that go septic. |

Overpopulation leads to less resources for each household. Unemployment, income, water etc. are lessened. Many places of great poverty are overcrowded, where families have scores of children. As I said, China is managing their overpopulation well to the point where they're managing their resources extremely well and their economy is flying. |

"You gave them all those old time stars, through Wars of Worlds, invaded by Mars..." I was thinking how funny it was that people were freaking out when this was played over the radio as people believed that aliens really were invading Earth. The reality is that this was not long ago either. It shows just how insecure we are at times. |

Just to clarify further "science " used to believe that our ancestors didn't live beyond 30ish...it was proven in the last twenty years that they lived longer on average than us.

So its not that 1000 or 2000 years ago everybody suddenly carked it at 30 or 40, many in fact lived a full lifespan to old age. But the early age (particularly child) mortality rate was so high the average lifespan was short. Now with modern medicine etc most are living to a ripe old age and federal treasurers etc are hyperventilating about how to afford the retirement bill. Consequently the retirement age has been abolished so we all stay at the coalface til we wear out, then pension will be abolished so the rest starve to death, so average lifespan will shorten again.................. (its too late at night now to think this all through)

It is NOT the overcrowding, maybe its the government and ludacris laws like this one?

China doesn't manage anything, they dictate! If you seriously believe that they are managing their overpopulation you should probably go spend some time over there and see what is really going on!!! |

Whilst Mr Orwell was responsible for some mind bending literature (thank him for the current 7 oclock timeslot on channel 10), the radio show in question was directed by one Orson Welles and was an adaptation of a 19th century book Was broadcast on halloween, 1938. Understandably, the people of the world were a little bit jumpy around the "W" word...

I have heard that most mammals (except humans) live for one billion heartbeats. Modern diet, medicine and living conditions have bumped humans up to about 2 - 2.5 billion heartbeats. These figures are AVERAGE.

yeah they say the human life "span" , is more consistant than human life expectancy.
life span 0-120. this has always been the case, and is not expected to change . they say 1 in 2 people born today will make 80. but if you are 67 years old now you have outlived 4 of every 5 people that share your birthday. |

I was amazed to hear the other day on the news (over the cricket tour saga) that Zimbabwe has the lowest life expectancy in the world.
Life expectancy for men - 37 years women - 34 years (2006) Of all the countries in the world I would've thought of maybe 30 countries that would have been worse off IMO. Mugabe is obviously ruling with an iron fist.
