Default Petrol price in the UK

Whilst we're complaining about our Petrol (and Gas) prices be thankful we dont live in England.

I was just talking to someone there and he's saying it's the wrong time to buy a 3 litre car as petrol is $2.52 a litre.

A gf residing in NZ's North Island rang me this morn and said she'd just paid A$2.10 per litre.

you really cant compare the prices with a straight conversion...salaries are way different...cost of living is way different.

Well that's why engines below 2L capacity and diesels are so popular over there.

I'm here at the moment and it is about £1.50. It might seem like a lot but if I was back here permanently, I would be earning significantly more that I do for the same job in Aus so as was mentioned before, whilst it certainly isn't cheap, working it out requires a more in depth algorithim that a base currency conversion.
Having hired a povvo pack 1.6 Focus, we were getting overtaken left, right and centre by vans etc on the main roads.....they were doing more than 160kmh so even though the some of the cars are a bit smaller, I had forgotten how much faster they drive over here!
We did see a surprising amount of hotrods, muscle cars etc around too as well as Chevy/Ford dayvans so in spite of petrol costs, not that many seemed overly concerned!

I think it's the same here really, I see so many V8's totting around in stop start traffic every day.

I still don't care about fuel prices.

Jamie, £1.50? Wow! I was only over there early last month and I was paying £1.10 a litre. That was in York and Birmingham. Prices must of taken a big jump.

You are right on the rest. I work over there a lot and when the exchange rate was 36p to the dollar things looked real expensive and when using the exchange rate to compare salarys we looked like a 3rd world country. We were winning lots of work (London Underground PPP, Network Rail) based on our cheap rates. Now, at 47p, things look comparable and we struggle a bit.

If I moved over there I would be on a higher salary than here but still not as well of. House prices, even in the North of England, seem to be almost double what you pay arround Melbourne. My cousin has a detached house for sale, about 20squares so its larger for the uk, £260,000.00. Thats in a country village near Sheffield. Food is cheaper in my opinion. Thats somthing thats turned arround in the last 10 years.

Anyway, isn't driving there a buz? Great signage, hardly ever get lost, I seldom see an accident and Transits passing you when your doing 90mph in the centre lane. I normaly get a 1.8 Focus or a 2.0 Mondeo.

Good luck while your over there

Well, I put $108 into the GT last night, it's 1.76 in hobart, so we're not far behind.

2 tanks per week is starting to hurt.

Let's not forget that the average pom doesn't do the kms per annum that we do.

Well if you want a better comparison for purchasing price parity (PPP), use the Bib Mac principal.

What does a big mac cost here in Aust v in GP - anyone?

Then do the same exercise for petrol as you were - this may give you a better indication.

(I understand that diesel is taxed differently in UK making it more attractive - we do it here in Aust but the other way - making it more expensive for a product that takes less refining and impact to the environment - go figure)

When I fuelled the hire car in Edinburgh late last month diesel was £1.29 and regular unleaded (95, they don’t have 91) was £1.19. At the time that was the equivalent of $2.84 and $2.62. I’m not sure what it was in Big Macs... Incidentally, diesel was always about £0.10 dearer than petrol, regardless of the discounting cycle.

I do know that I have stopped complaining about fuel prices since our trip over there.

Thats a common view that I once held but not any longer. People in the UK drive just as far as we do to get to work. One hour plus travel is not uncommon on the motorways to commute.

UK drivers as Steve said do indeed cover as many miles as we do...bear in mind that we (on this forum) are into cars whereas many are not and just use their cars for pottering about between the shops, home and the office.
We were only in the bottom corner of England (Dorset) for a few days and yet managed to rack up just shy of 700 miles (not kms!)

Another thing to take into consideration when looking at fuel prices is that most of the cheapest petrol is a min of 95RON or 98, not 91 as we have. Take that into consideration and they aren't really paying too much more than us, suffice to say, we are all paying too much!
Steve, I was shocked to find fuel at 1.50- I did see it cheaper but that was as bad as it got.

I was wondering when someone would point that out, they are always carrying on that our prices aren't that bad compared to overseas.

But they are getting a higher quality fuel for their money. So we are paying similar prices for fuel as overseas, but getting crap fuel for it.

it is going to be interesting how much we get screwed when they drop 91ron altogether in 2010.

Its pretty bloody cost over here, £1.10 here in Lincoln for unleaded. Added to that you can be paying over £400 a year to tax a car then car insurance on top of that.
Time to get the fuel protesters out again!!!

Australia is largely urbanised with crowded multilaned roads taking you out of the larger cities and poorer single laned highways everywhere else. The UK is very similar. I had a H reg 1.3 Escort and I was driving from London NW2 to the otherside of the M25 everyday and whinging about the price of petrol and then pining for my V8 at home when I was on the motorway getting passed by transit vans and turbo diesel Escort panel vans.

On another note, the way I see it is that the Falcon will be extinct after this generation because people don't need large cars anymore. Families are smaller and fuel is going up and that means no more fleet market. People in our largely urbanised society will have no need to have a large car anymore. It's cheaper to catch a flight and hire a buzz box at your destination.

The one thing that I noticed in the UK when I was over there is the fact that the transport system is so much better than what we have here. Not only in the larger cities, but the amount of trains that will take you anywhere and the fact that there are better motorways that will efficiently let you drive anywhere too.

Anyone know the prices in France and Italy? (petrol), or know which websites you look up?

Not that I think my Hertz Grande Punto and 206 will use much, still wouldn't mind knowing.

Cheers

There was a pretty good article on this exact topic in today's Age (if you are Melb.)

Didn't keep my copy but someone may be able to post?

In summary Australia wasn't that bad - however this doesn't consider the income relativity issue though.

Cost of living is far cheaper here. Average wage is higher, cars are cheaper, insurance is cheaper, fuel is cheaper etc.

Average wage in the UK is AUD$48k, here its $57k

Minimum wage here is $13.74, in the UK its AUD$11.80
