It's unbelievable that they have been on air for 20 years and are still very popular. GO SIMPSONS!

I can remember when it first aired and grown men in my office were walking around going "Doh" and talking about Duff beer.
20 years on and I still think it's pathetic, I know I'm in the minority and so many people love it, including my teenage kids. I just can't understand mature men watching this junk and imitating it, at the end of the day it's a kids cartoon. But for those of you who like it good luck to you and it must be good to have lasted this long, it's just not my thing. Please don't flame me over this, it's just my 2 cents worth.

Isn't it an adult cartoon that originated on an adult show? Most kids don't get half the good jokes that are comedic commentary on social, political and religious topics, and just get off on the visuals. Maybe you don't get them either jaydee? It's certianly not as witty as it was 15-20 years ago, but it's still good for a laugh.

I have seen enough simpsons to tell every episode word for word. Foxtel has it Everyday, I have seasons etc. I love the show, but I don't go around quoting them.
I'm not lying, I'm just telling fiction with my mouth. |

The others being Seinfeld, Two and a Half Men, and My Name is Earl. Brit comedy is different. The Americans don't understand subtlety. For them it's overt face pulling, over-acting, and filth. Some shows can rise above though.... The beaut thing about this thread is that nobody is really right. Opinions are only that. The Simpsons is fantastic, and it's lasted 20 years due to the family structure around it. We can all see ourselves in the story at some point. I saw the new opening credits on Youtube last week (I am busy Wednesday nights) and yeah...they look good, but the 'old' ones did the job, and were faster. Since The Simpsons credits don't actually show any names (except for at the very end), I thought it was just a waste of time in the end... But a great show.

I do not miss an episode at 6pm, for I really don't like TV and it's one of few shows I actually make an effort to watch, even if I have seen the episode 300 times.

Since they replaced their writing staff the show got to the point that I was embarrassed to watch the crap and have never watched it since.

This widescreen season is still the sub-par episodes that have plagued the Simpsons for a few years. Occasionally there will be a decent episode and occasionally there will be a funny line but it's not the show it used to be. That's to be expected 20 years on but I guess no-one will pull the trigger until it starts to lose money.
It may be a cartoon but it's clearly aimed at an adult/mature audience. |

The widescreen version is now HD too. Too bad CH10 think 24 hour sport in HD is the most important thing in the world and have gotten rid of all their HD programming!
But I agree that the Simpsons have gone down hill. Anything before around season 17-18 always makes me laugh no matter how many times I watch it. |

I watch the odd episode of the Simpsons every now and again but not religiously like I use to.
I can't barely stop laughing during Two and a Half Men a lot of the time, that show is hilarious : |

Bahhh just get Austar/Foxtel/Cable in your area, flick over to The Comedy Channel and done. Whose lins is it anyway?, Just for Laughs, The world stands up....
TV1 ... JAG! NCIS, beats the hell out of those CSI crap! Oh and Fox Classics. MASH! If I had 8-10 hours to waste in front of a TV at some point, that would be my choice of programs! Just for 15mins poke Blood Sweat and Gears....

Simpsons has to be an all time classic altho recently Family Guy has the upper hand.
How I Met Your Mother and The Office are other US comedy shows I like.

Family Guy will never be a classic in the same sense as The Simpsons.
Family Guy exists because of The Simpsons, dare I say. Family Guy lacks the creativity and sensibility of The Simpsons, in which it is totally stupid and unrealistic (though I still enjoy it). The Simpsons' family dynamics are far more believable, which is why it will always be THE most groundbreaking cartoon series ever.

Re: Comedies. The Simpsons win hands down, followed by American Dad and Metalocalypse (sick humour) Non cartoon are 2.5 men, not much else really compares. Raymond and Sienfield are very lame.

I'd have to say my must watch US comedy at the moment would be the Big Bang Theory and it's not necessarily because I work with a guy who's exactly like Sheldon. : Corner Gas was also mentioned on here not long ago. I grabbed the first season and 6 episodes in, I don't think I've ever seen such a refreshing and natural comedy series where it feels like I'm not watching a bunch of comedians that can't act. Kudos to whoever recommended it. |
