I was watching this live last night and saw them open fire with live ammunition before using tear gas to push the demonstrators back which raised a question in my mind is it lawful to shoot unarmed demonstrators attempting to enter another country's borders? Im not well versed on the subject but would like peoples thoughts. Personaly i cant see how shooting dead any unarmed people is ever tolerable i know its a delicate situation there but live ammunition! |

Tragic. Does anybody know if the Israelis warned the protesters of what would happen if they tried crossing the border line???
Unfortunately I fear the whole thing will all be caught up in a stream of 'national security' mumbo-jumbo...

Yeh they gave them warnings "Despite numerous warnings, both verbal and later warning shots in the air, dozens of Syrians continue to approach the border and IDF (Israel Defence Forces) forces were left with no choice but to open fire towards the feet of protesters in efforts to deter further actions," an army spokesman said.
Reported last night on the scence was tear gas was only used when the journalist asked the army why they wernt using it |

Under international law, you are permitted to prevent illegal intrusion into your borders by whatever means required. No warning is actually required, it is usually done for political reasons nothing else.
Considering Syria backs Hezbollah and Hamas, I can see why the IDF would be more willing to use live ammo as a just in case measure. |

The loss of life is a shame. But no matter what, I would NEVER try and F*&K around with a person pointing a machine gun at me.......
ESPECIALLY in that area, where tensions are already high. |

Actually wrong... dunno what law your reading. Under the rules of the geneva convention you can only shoot ARMED soldiers in a "declared" war. IE one side has declared war on the other. There is NO LAW where you can shoot unarmed civilians, or have we forgotten WW2 where a heap of nazis went to jail or were hung for killing UNARMED civilians. Israel has on a large number of occasions committed "war crimes" and used banned weapons (phospherous grenades etc) on civilians. It has even boarded ships in international waters and killed civilians just recently.

You're a dead set moron and are asking to be shot if you constantly defy orders from Police/Military to stop and keep advancing. No sympathy here at all.
They did the right thing IMO. Sooner or later people have to realise that their are consequences for their actions.. How do the military know at that time there are no guns or suicide bombers within a group of demonstrators? particularly in that area.. |

As this breaches most of the entire first point in the site T&C AND it is absolutely guaranteed to bring out the lunatic fringe, I'll close it now before that happens.
