NEW laws will allow authorities to collect and monitor Australians' internet records, including their web-browsing history, social media activity and emails.
But the laws, which will specifically target suspected cyber criminals, do not go as far as separate proposed laws designed to retain every Australian internet user's internet history for two years in the name of national security. Under the laws passed yesterday, Australian state and federal police will have the power to compel telcos and internet service providers to retain the internet records of people suspected of cyber-based crimes, including fraud and child pornography. Only those records made after the request will be retained, but law enforcement agencies will be prevented from seeing the information until they have secured a warrant. http://www.brisbanetimes.com.au/tech...822-24mur.html

I am sorry are we not a democratic society? Yet the government at the same time condemns russia for jailing people for speaking out against the president. So they can't be a communist nation, but suddenly we can. I have nothing to hide, but being able to see my internet records, email etc for 2 years, with or without a warrant, amount to communism.

At face value this seems like a much more sensible approach and the computer version of a wire tap.
If somebody is suspected of a crime then "tap" his computer activity get a warrant and go for it.

Thing is, from what I gathered from that is that they're able to log EVERYONEs data but only be able to access it if they had a warrant. Seems that they believe everyone to be guilty of something so they log everything and access it as they require.

Nazis were fascist, not communist. There is quite a bit of difference. These things happen because the public allows them to happen. They have short memories, no passion, are easily led and easily convinced of anything by mass media. Fed lies but there's plenty of pokies to distract them and mind numbing TV, like kittens with a ball of wool. We need to have a look at what the French do when they are unhappy. Proper protests and riots in the streets. We are all pawns here because we are so selfish, comfortable and stupid. It's a pity.

This is exactly why 'anonymous' hacked aapt's data.
They were showing how crap ISP's are at security, and demonstrating the type of information that is recorded. |

Bigpond does log what you access. I'm guessing this is another step to allow authorities to access what they log to catch out cyber criminals.

Personally I wouldn't careless if they wanted to check my internet history....Warrant or not.....if you're behaving yourself, what have you got to worry about? Getting caught browsing adult porn sites without your other half finding out?

What determines being a cyber criminal? Downloading music and movies? 90% of people with the internet are guilty of that. Watching porn? Most blokes would be guilty of that too.
Are they going to arrest 3/4 of the country? How do they decide who is 'more guilty' than the rest of the proletariat (appropriate terminology in light of this new law, I think).

The USA has passed some vile laws which is slowly destroying their constitution. Governments who are supposedly "democratic" are slowly screwing us.... and eveyone thinks its a "commie" plot... why dont we say its a nazi plot? Nazis were sent to the USA thanks with help from some "holy" sources in Europe after WW2... I started a thread on the NSW governments plan to amend laws about recalling information AFTER you make a statement to Police... Now the nsw government isnt Labour yet is passing a law which affects an accused persons right.... a commie plot? But I wholeheartly agree with you on our lack of will to fight for justice, our lack of passion and how easily we forget things! The "she'll be right" attitude will undo us all.... Its because of our lack of fight that governments get to do whatever they please without fear from the public.

Apparently all your internet history, especially stuff related to Google owned website, is all stored somewhere and can be viewed by certain people.
Saw it on another forum, people were complaining that the government was going to invade their privacy. All I think is if someone was going to look through my internet history, they must of ticked off everything else on the list of things to do and are now scrapping the bottom of the barrel if they want to view my boring internet history. Ever seen an ad on a website related to something you like? That's no coincidence, the internet knows what you have previously viewed and puts ads up specifically for things you may like. |

If this stuff does genuinely worry anybody and it should go to this site and give it a read it is a free software and open network project to allow people to browse the internet freely without your activity being monitered or logged because we all have a right to privacy.

The reason I throw the word communism out is because more and more it is becoming a "do as we tell you" government, not choose what you do, but there may be a consequence. That is how a communist country works, you do as your told. |

Just because you have "democracy" doesn't mean your rights are protected in any way. If public opinion can be molded a certain way, they can pass any legislation they want. We've seen this with guns, cars, knives, terrorists, bikies...
It is a failure of the system that we live in that we don't have any rights, at least rights that can't be legislated away by parliament, and this is the system we inherited from Great Britain. The POMs are suffering similarly too. You have to ask yourself why in Australia you can go to prison for 6 months for refusing to tell the police a password for your encrypted computer, yet in the US this is completely legal. It is to do with the fact that their rights are enshrined into a Bill of Rights, which is an integral part of their constitution.
