I plugged in my camping lantern to recharge it (it's an Arlec RDL2 for reference) and after a while checked back to see how it was going.
The side of the lantern (not switched on during charging) was very bloody hot. I've never noticed this before. I unplugged it from the charger, and picked up the charger/transformer and the back of it was so hot I almost burnt myself. I unplugged the charger itself and even now having had 1/2 an hour to cool down it is still very warm. The charger is not the one for that lantern, but the input-output is the same. Now here's the funny thing, I went and dug out the charger that came with the lantern, and not only is the input-output the same (12V DC @ 500mA) it is from the same manufacturer and has the same part number! So I've now got it charging on the Arlec charger to see what happens. Do I have a dud charger or is something in the lantern stuffed? Something tells me its the latter...

If the other charger is indeed "the same maker and same part number" then I would suspect one of them is a dud... |

Some chargers have the center pin as positive, some have the center pin as negative.
something to watch out for. |
