Default Porsche 911 GT3 RS to get 500bhp

Quote:

The next-generation Porsche 911 GT3 RS will be a "far greater step forward" over the current GT3 than the last RS was in comparison with its GT3 stablemate, according to a well-placed source.

As with the previous generation, the new GT3 RS will be both lighter and more powerful than the GT3 on which it is based, in this case the 475bhp, 1505kg car derived from the current 991 series of 911.

However, the major step forward with the new RS has come with the aerodynamics. An extensive system of wings and spoilers, shown here in spy shots, means the car is already developing levels of downforce that make it "close to a racing car" far ahead of its global debut next year.

Currently the car is testing with a standard GT3 engine, but the RS is said to have an output of "at least 500bhp", eclipsing even the 493bhp of the 4.0-litre, limited-edition Porsche GT3 RS 4.0, which will make it the most powerful naturally aspirated six-cylinder road car engine produced by Porsche to date.

Additionally, Porsche has reworked the GT3’s suspension and fitted the wheels and tyres from the 918 Spyder, improving grip and traction.

Purists might have been hoping that the RS would provide an excuse to return to a manual gearbox in the GT3, but it seems it will feature a seven-speed dual-clutch automatic like the existing car, although bespoke ratios are a possibility.

Given that the GT3 can hit 62mph from rest in a claimed 3.5sec, the lighter, more powerful RS should reduce this to the region of 3.2 or 3.3sec.

However, due to the added drag of its aerodynamic addenda, top speed is unlikely to increase beyond the GT3’s 196mph and might even be reduced.

Official pricing and details have yet to be released. The current GT3, however, costs £100,540.

sans the rear wing on this dev model......

I was really hoping the RS would see a manual (not that I had plans to buy one), it's a shame this model misses out, it is the one model I think should definitely have the manual option.

Keep up that improvement in hp and they'll start catching up to FPV GT and F6.
Shame the Ford products are 400+kg more in weight. LOL

I will take it in silver with a smaller rear wing, a turbo and GT3RS decal along the side skirt. Of course I will also need a winning powerball ticket.

Porsche is hard at work preparing the 991 911 GT3 RS as a prototype was spied testing recently on the Nürburgring.

After fixing the fire-related issue on the 911 GT3, Porsche has resumed work on the hardcore RS version which probably won't be delayed as initially believed so chances are it will be introduced in October at the 2014 Paris Motor Show. It will feature a modified body with wider fenders, different canards along with a big wing at the back. Also expect to see an updated roof and a restyled hood for a better aerodynamic efficiency.

Details about what will power the Porsche 911 GT3 RS are scarce at the moment but chances are it will be an evolution of the familiar 6-cylinder 3.8-liter generating more than 475 PS (349 kW). The motor will be coupled to a tweaked PDK gearbox and there are some reports about a manual transmission although Porsche hasn't confirmed this spicy rumor.

May just be a prototype wing as it looks a bit cobbled together.

Those wheels look cool, and obviously be super lightweight judging by how slim the spokes are, there doesn't seem to be much to them.

More power than FPV T6 or S/C 8 out of an N/A 6.....I think they're doing OK.

I wish FPV did a stripped out track special like a Porsche GT3 and called it a GTHO...I think it would have been a hit.

Yeah I can but it'd take more than just HP to catch the Porsche. Funny to see the comparison around a track.

Just on that, I found it fantastic by Porsche to replace all the engines on all 991 GT3s (affected or not) instead of retrofitting the fix.

I had a 911 GT3 for a few days around four years ago. Every other car I have driven is a complete piece of snot in comparison, including the modern GT40 style Ford GT Supercar. Was even comfortable, compliant and fuel efficient, sounded unbelievable when up it, gear change perfect, steering perfect everything perfect. Go troppe up Hotham in a way that would have left one of our GTs a steaming pile of engine retarded poo with no front tyres left and the front tyres of the 911 were still perfectly square... Never drive one, it will spoil you for life and nothing else will do.

You're kidding me right? This thing would spank our F6's/GT's. It's way lighter, not to mention it's only an N/A 6 which makes it all that more impressive.

I read the same thing.

Also, the whole 911 range will be turbo in the next few years.
Booooooo......... there is something quite special about the sound of a N/A Porsche flat 6, something the turbo versions just cant compete with. I feel the same about the Fords inline 6, I prefer the thrashy rasp of the N/A compared to the burbly turbo.
