I have an acoustic guitar at home that i would like to learn how to play. I was thinking that i might be able to find something on the net a teach myself. I have no idea how to read music, i did a little in year 8 at high school but that was a long time ago now. Does anyone know of any good resources on the net or has any taught themself and could offer any advice.
cheers, Luke

If you want to do it the cheap easy way.
www.power-tab.net (download the program) www.powertabs.net (download pretty much any song you like in tab and music form) Depends on what you want to do. I personally learnt to read music first. Things like ba ba black sheep etc, just so you know what notes are what. Learn the octaves, how to get to the same note elsewhere on the fret board. Then learn the basics chords (wild thing, highway to hell etc easy 3/4 chord songs) It all depends how far you want to go. I have not played for ages... I could still pick it up and play a few old things and read musical notes with a bit of difficulty. It depends on how much time and effort you are willing to put into it. I have also read that there is a strong link between mathematical and musical talent.. you wouldn't happen to be an accountant would you? |

Screw tablature. It is ALWAYS wrong.
Luke the best way to learn would be either do it entirely by ear and just keep going till you get it right (the way I learnt), or get yourself a book called "Ernie Ball's How To Play Guitar". Comes in 2 volumes and is by far the best teaching book. I think they're about $30 each and both music stores in town have them.

I am just about to start learning and have bought a "guitare for dummues" DVD. It is meant to be really good at teaching the basics. I will let you know how I go.

Yes dont fall into the wrong tab dilemma, best way is to start off with chords, start learning some notes (which are handy), some key's and the notes in them, before graduating to lead work
Tabs can be easy but alot on the net are very wrong, some songs i have learned by ear better than than the notes listed on tab, after a fair while playing hearing notes you will be able to instantly recognise where it is on the fretboard |

"Ernie Ball's How To Play Guitar. thats also how i learnt how to play electric guitar. im also with austin its hard to find online tabs that are actually correct. Learn by listening to music and practicing like that, also i payed for lessons for a few months to learn, once u got most basic stuff down from lessons just keep practicing.

Nothing beats one on one tuition and knowledge of a real guitar teacher.
I am a guitar teacher myself, to 5 different Primary schools around my area. I teach kids aged between 7 and 10, and find it easiest to get them to learn notes, because the chords are too big for their hands to reach around. The best way to learn is actually get some one on one tuition though, with the aid of a book and/or internet. |
