Default Confused !

Does anyone know exactly wat the RTA mean by "engine performance modifications" ? I am currently on my p's and i come under the new laws regarding wat we p platers cant drive. Prohibited vehicles are those with:

Eight or more cylinders.
A turbocharged engine.
A supercharged engine.
Engine performance modifications.
Certain high performance six cylinder engine vehicles

But wat do they mean by performance mods exactly, my mate has extractors and 3 inch system on his commodore and wen he was pulled over by cops to check his car, he was told it was ok (with those mods) ! so does it only apply to internal work or wat ?

PS. this is in NSW and i dont think any other state has introduced these laws :

I would check with the RTA themself to clear up this matter.

ask 10 different people at the rta and you will get 10 different answers (if you are lucky) ...

It's up to RTA (or police) to determine this.

So even a CAI is a 'performance mod', same with extractors!

Check with the Road Tax Authority man, because their rules are so stupid that you'll need to get the persons name and write it down for your records in case you are pulled over. BTW, has anyone seen the list for the banned'non banned cars?

An old ford customline is banned; at 2 tonnes with 87kw, yet a Honda S2000 is allowed weighing in at around a tonne with 170kw. This is just one example - there are many more.
I live in NSW and I can tell you that I'm really starting to hate it, because its run by a bunch of incompetant pathetic excuses for f**kstains. Next year their election logo is gonna be "NSW labour - we've got what it takes to take what you've got".

anything is a performance mod if it is deemed better then what the car left the factory with, a high flow k&n panel filter can be called a performance mod.

it's just a matter of who pulls you over and what mood they are in.

i just rang the RTA enquiry line, apparently "engine performance modifications" according to them means:
QUOTE "engine modifications requiring an engineers certificate" END QUOTE

this has made me happier knowing that (obvisouly) i can still do slight modifications to exhaust and intake, which is enough for me for a while :

PS. wat exactly are the limits before you need an engineers certificate ? im thinking it must be pretty modified to need that !

an engineers certificate is usually putting a V8 into a car that came as an I6 or turbo charging or super charging, otherwise cam etc are all not engineered.

I suggest ring the RTA again, get another person and see what they say, everyone at the RTA has a different usually.

You would actually be better off going in personally, find out who is the best person to speak to, tell them you will be quoting them if need be.
Or you could always speak with the local cops, they should and I did say should have an idea of what is and isn't allowed considering they are often the ones to be pulling you over!!!!!!!!!

Mate , that is like asking how long a peice of string is ! you can ask as many different people in the world that you like , but at the end of the day , the deffinition of a "Modified engine " is so broad that everyone will have a different answer ! It doesnt matter if the RTA tell you that your engine is ok by their standards , as the next time a copper pulls you over , who is in a bad mood cause his missus didnt B/Qvv him that morning, and he thinks its modified and slaps a certain feathered freind on your windscreen, its gonna cost you time and money and there is sweet FA you can do about it !

Mate, Carl Scully and Morris Dilemna talk so much crap, that they can both wipe their nose and ИИИИ at the same time.

Even volvo's are banned, because they are turbo. only 130kw for 1650kg but they are banned. Despite being reputedly the safest cars on the road.

And speaking of roads, NSW has the worst. I sent a bill for a 2 new michelin mxv's at $474.00/tyre to Strathfield council with photo's of a section in lane 2 on the hume highway, as well as my shredded tyre from the benz because of these dumb ИИИИ politicians, accompanied by a note from a mate who is a barrister. Guess what, they paid.

Well if they're like NSW government, they will have atleast 5 enquiries at a rough cost of 1 million dollars each, before they order 20 grand worth of stationary.

They've done an interesting thing with Porsches...

Every naturally aspirated 911 from series 993 on (1994 - current) is banned. But a 964 (1989 - 1993) is perfectly legal. Now, a 964 Carrera2 is about as fast in a straight line as your current VZ HSV 297kW car, and handles ALOT better, so it can corner ALOT better. They're also in the $60k range now.

The new 987 Boxster (2005 on) is banned, but the old 986 (1997 - 2004) is not. Again, a 986 Boxster S will match a VZ Crapsport in the straights and pwn it in the corners. And earlier models are popping up in the $60k area too.

You can also legally buy a 675kg, 88kW, 1995 Lotus Elise, $35k. 88kW and 675kg is 130.37kW/tonne. The car does 5.5 sec 0-100km/h and 13.5 down the 1/4 mile. It is also extremley dangerous in the hands of an inexperienced driver, and quite easy to lose control in. But if you've got 35 grand (and believe me, many P platers can achieve this), and you want one, be the RTA's guest and buy it. Or buy a 1985 911 Carrera 3.2. Or an Integra Type R.

But... say you want a 165kW, 16 second V8 Fairmont Ghia. I'm sorry, its banned. It has 8 cylinders. :
