Well, my friends mum is buying a new car. She's got $20k to spend, and she's all of a sudden got her mind made up on a KIA. Thats right. Ugh. So we're trying to convince her to get something else. Anybody got any other ideas? Its gotta be brand new, four door. And that about sums it up. Ideas?

Kia is bloody bad. Well i not sure what around for that price new these days. As in small cars go for being well made i would lean towards mazda or a civic. Civic is over 20. Maybe a madza 2 i think they are

Toyota is a good choice for cheaper cars, good build quality.
You could get a Toyota Corolla for 20k. Or even a YARiS but im biased :P Toby

Check out Discount New Cars . It's a good research tool, even if you don't use it to purchase, it'll give you an idea of the common discounts available to the average Joe. On the home page simply select the prices you want to search, accross all brands and away you go. Here's some that stuck out at me straight away: Tiida, Corolla, Yaris, Mazda 2, Elantra, 206, Colt, Polo, Fiesta (go a Zetec) or even a Swift. All of these had several models in this bracket.

If she can afford this - get it! They are an absolutley wonderful car. Those fuel consumption figures are very conservative. These things can get 1000km+ to one tank (my dad's gf has one.. 01 model... it gets 4.35L/100km). Build quality shames... anything this side of a $100,000 Audi or Mercedes or BMW... extremley good car. There's not a car in that class or price range that I would even look at next to one of those.

OR, she could buy a second hand BA. Why does it have to be brand new? A BA XT with 50,000 on the clock will be much more reliable for another 5 years than most new small cars that you pay less than 20k for. The BA would probably still have a little warranty left on it. And, you can get them for well under 20k.

Honda Jazz, a Mazda, or a Corolla or Echo, wouldn't drive a KIA if someone gave me a new one for free, I'd sell it and mod my car hehehe

Yaris sedan......its bigger than the Echo.
Toyota Build Quality, Toyota Resale - even people who have no idea about cars understand that. Alos consider Hyundai Accents - 5 year 100k warranty is hard to go past and you get used to thier quirks pretty quickly. Ford Fiesta is a good pick as well. Yaris sedan is my posters pick |

The only Korean cars I'd consider are the new Hyundais, the Elantra is a fairly decent car apparently.
However if she's prepared to go for smaller, there are plenty of other excellent cars around, and there's a lot more choice. (Fiesta, Jazz, Colt, Mazda2, Yaris, Polo, etc) Perhaps an ex-demo or 05 plated Focus?

Viset carbroker.com they have a link at the top of the page. My wife just used them to buy a new Focus and they supply a great service in obtaining an awesome price for her. The Fiesta is another great buy that fits in that 20k price range.

Want a good car just ask a mechanic/enthusiast online, a mechanic that is an enthusiast pays particular attention to all facets of a car not only mechanical and will point you in the right direction. car brokers or c@#k smokers would be my second option.
