Sup all?
I'm considering installing an exhaust tip on my car and I just wanted to know if there is any difference in the sound of the vehicle? I want a deeper sound than I have now and really don't want to go out and get myself a new exhaust system due to the fact my current one is in perfect working order and that I am on a budget. I have a 1985 Ford Meteor GC2 Ghia (1.6 litre 4 cyl.) and it has a 1.25" exhaust on it. Still stock I think it is. Just got the muffler replaced which is another reason for me not to get a new exhaust system. |

Sorry mate, you will not get any improvement, the only way the sound can increase is by increasing the size of the piping. Tips are just for looks.
If you wanna put a dumpy on the end, meaning the tip bends on an angle towards the ground. That might make a very small gain but not worth it.

As said tips do nothing.
Cannon mufflers change note, but not performance.

a set of second hand extractors with a 2" pipe shouldnt set you back a whole lot and makes for some fun noise

bigger system wouldnt hurt either methinks

my dad's XR8 has a Herrod Cat back system in it. anyway, after we took off the standard 2.5" twin tips with baffles in them, and put some some big **** off tips, the note got a little louder, and its a bit more droney :P

It changes the way the exhaust note resonates into the open air.... so more, tone/note as opposed to the overall sound. But with a std exhaust system, there's not much noise in the first place... and therefore you prob wont even notice a change.
With a modified exhaust, that's actually making some noise, there's a lot of different sounds you can produce by varying the tip.

adding a tip is not automatically adding a resonator. that seems to be the difference between what sykotik asked and what mutha suggested

When I installed a 2 1/4 inch cat-back on back2thefutura's 2.0 Focus, it was a pretty flat sound, until we added on the 3 inch rolled chrome tip, which gave it a much rounder, more polished note. Wasn't a massive difference but it was still noticeable whilst driving.

Wouldn't the vibrations of the pipe echo in the exhaust tip, thus making it louder?

yes it did make a bit of difference to the sound. the biggest thing that made a difference to the sound of it though was when it was driving off with it's new owner. sounded great that day.

In noise, the sound resinats off the road instead of straight into the atmosphere. It's only slightly louder.

No, i wouldnt expect change in power... or a noticeable change in volume...
But the overall sound/tone/note of the exhaust will be influenced by the shape, size, configuration and material of the tip.

When I put the dump tip on the VL (Replacing the "Cough* Cannon) it gave a nicer note, but it didn't really make it louder.
Slightly off topic. Does anyone hate ridculousy loud exhausts on slow cars? My mate had a N/A VL Auto, with a very loud exhaust. It was the slowest, biggest POS ever. |

18R-C engine dumping straight out of the headers on the way to the exhaust shop this morning - a great start to the day. And being an RA40 celica, not the quickest thing on 4 wheels lol.

Wouldn't removing the resonators mean that my car wouldn't pass emission standards?

Yeah, just an update. I bought the exhaust tip. 1 and 6/8 of an inch and slapped it on. The sound, generally sounds the same when the car is idling however a difference in sound can be heard when the accelerator is pumped. It's a little throatier than before. Just need to get it welded on and all shall be good.

Why does it have to be welded, cant you just fit it to the end of the exhaust.

Double walled and semi resonator tips certainly can effect the exhaust sound see

and those like me who were around in the 70's will remember the infamous rat trap exhaust tip that made your 6 pot Torana sound like a V8............ until they were legislated off the road.
