Default Best ISP ?

I live on the Gold Coast and my ISP contract with Primus is about to expire. Having had nothing but bad service from this bunch of rude jerks I'm looking to move to a more professional outfit.

"On The Net" based locally at Ashmore has been recommended to me but I'd like to hear any other recommendations from you guys.

TPG.

I am with them for the third time. Had to move previously... hehe. But keep coming back to them for broadband. Been with them on ADSL2+ now for 7 months and only had downtime of about 3 hrs total in that time. Thats pretty darn good in my books.

+1 for Internode.
Optusnet support staff here at Optus use Internode for their own accounts ... must be for a decent reason.

We've been with Optusnet for almost 7 years and we've never had a problem with them. Sure, they gave us a really bad modem at first (RCA) but due to me calling them many times (in which they always responded), they gave us a new modem and replaced a busted thing in our Optusbox, and everything's been fine since.

No problems on this side of the fence.

You need to first determine your needs, your budget and availability of service where you live.

Then you will find what you want.

But for my piece of toast, Optusnet has always proven reliable for us.

I'm with internode as well but I second Laminge's post. See what suits you on whirlpool. Internode may not suit.

I checked out the Internode site and the plans on offer far exceed what I'm currently on ... for the same money!

I then went on the Whirlpool forum and quite a few people are complaining about the waiting time (20min - 50min) for service calls to be answered at Internode.

That's mainly due to the large volumes of people moving over to Internode due to other ISP's raising prices, or doing other things which upsets their customers. It's not a normal thing at Internode. They do pride themselves on their service, but every now and then, something happens in the industry and more and more people flock to Internode causing these long wait times.

My experience with them is as follows: I've been with them for over 3 years now. In that 3 years, the only downtime that I have had has either been the fault of my modem, or of Telstra, or moving house. In that 3 years, I have only had to call their support 2 or 3 times. I never have had to wait on the phone too long, mainly because they also offer a callback facility where you leave your name and number and they'll retain your place in the queue and call you back.
Best thing to do is to not call at peak times. I.e. When everyone gets home from school/work. Best time to call (if ever needed) generally is first thing in the morning.

You might want to have a read on their website. There is a lot of information on there and you may not even have to call them. Signing up is all done on-line, so a phone call may not even be necessary.

I better stop now. Very long post...

I am with PrimusAOL, never had any problems. Sometimes a wait on the phone, but that happens with any company today. If you go with Primus AOL, you can use AOL 9 Security Edition from the States. This has a full suite of anti-virus, anti-spyware etc. No extra cost. AOL 9 has no support in Australia. But the home page etc runs rings around what Australian ISP's offer. Broadband has never dropped out or slowed down. But it gets back to what you want. As posts have said Whirlpool is a good place to start.

I'm with People Telecom (ex Swiftel) and have been since 2004. I can honestly say that I have had no problems with their ADSL service. They have had a few outages early in the piece but that was normally due to Telecom fiddling with the line.

The phone service takes a little while to get through, but that is experienced with most ISPs. (I used the phone service to upgrade my plan in Nov/Dec 2006 and it took me 35 mins to get answered).

Their plans are very reasonable and generous and, to date, I have had no reason to cause me to look elsewhere for another ISP.

But each to his/her own preference, I'm just giving you my experience with People Telecom and sure, you're doing the right thing in asking for others opinions on what's out there.

Exetel are congesting constantly and you will most likely be running slow most of the time. They tell their customers that Optus (who they purchase bandwidth from) is throttling them ... but they just need more bandwidth to cope with customer load.

Funny you mentioned them. :

I'm with Bigpond at the moment. Am happy with them so far. Once my time runs out (Early Next Year) I'll change to Internode.

Cheers

AAPT.
After over 2 years with TPG, they didn't offer any upgrade or customer retention program. Their call centre is just appaling too.
AAPT were fantastic, spoke to someone fluent in English (in Bendigo) on a Sunday. Had been changed over by Tuesday. Can't recommend enough.
