G'day Everyone,
Received these photos via E-mail this morning. Workmate in the NT was driving in a station through some long grass late last year... Didn't think to check for grass around the exhaust/gearbox. :togo: Oh What a Feeling Indeed!!!         Fire extinguishers have now been fitted to all their vehicles. Cheers Darran

I think there is something in the handbook that tells you not to park them over long grass. Proves Prados were not meant to got off road.

Spinifex catched on drivelines of almost any 4WD, if you are up that way you should be stopping everyu 30 min to clear it away from the exhaust / radiator /engine area, otherwise this will happen, no matter what car you are driving. (unless you put a complete underbody tray on it)

I did a search earlier on this. It's amazing how the story changes.
On one site they said it happened on the Canning Stock Route in WA. It actually happened on Newcastle Waters Station NT. Another said someone stole the Prado, and took it for a joyride (They based that assumption on the fact the bullbar has a bend in it, and has no numberplate)

As turboute mentioned....
Any 4x4 info book or video mentions that driving in long grass needs special attention. I saw one doco advising that first you drive with the windows down to smell for fire, then you have handy a coat hander that has been straightened but hooked on the end, as well as a 5ltr garden sprayer (the kind with the long neck nozle) then when you smell fire, or every now and again you hop out, pull out all the trapped grass with the wire and if there is fire get right under there with the sprayer and put it out. Shame about the 4x4... $15 of gear and some common sense would have stopped that from happening! |

In the bottom picture you can actually see where the left rear wheel left a pool of molten aluminium where it burnt. Unbelievable, hope the fella had mobile phone reception.

He grabbed his Sat-Phone out luckily.
The boss gave me a huge tune up for breaking the UHF aerial on that Prado too...had to buy a new one... At least I didn't burn the car to the ground!
