It should have no difference compared to sitting at the lights with your foot on the brakes. The handbrake just brakes one or 2 wheels (usually the rear) whereas a footbrake activates all 4 brakes.

Considering people use it to control the car at times whilst in gear, I couldn't see it being a bad thing.

Exactly. No damage at all.

Sorry to be OT but what happens when you do it in a manual rear drive car without putting the clutch in? I'd imagine the engine would come to a sudden stop/stall as the driving wheels have been jammed to a stop suddenly...

Some people do it at traffic lights because they're too lazy to hold the foot brake. Funny thing is, the handbrake requires more work...

Danny. I don't know of too many cars that could lock the wheels with the hand brake at speed. Maybe a foot operated one..

Which brings up the next point, frequent hard use of the handbrake usually stuffs the hand brake. Cable operated ones usually the cable sticks or is stretched. Then you will get brake drag (woosh woosh woosh) or very ineffective handbrake.

If you did lock the wheels, it would stall. Just like in a manual when you slam on the normal brakes and lock the wheels.

Some people use the hand brake at traffic lights because they are used to driving a manual. Hill starts on steep hills usually require use of the handbrake, or say trying to get out of a small city carpark on a steep hill.

Using the handbrake instead of foot brake at traffic lights also makes the brake light globes last longer!

Pulling up the handbrake can cause damage to your rims, and remove tread from your tyres.

not only that, it can cause runout issues by having ovality problems, if its the drum type... then they wil only grip in one or two places, and give you flatspots...
its like on the old pushbike... where the brakes would only grab on one spot and actually lock up...
and hes probably worried about the torque running through the driveline..
most autos nowadays have a creep mode built in... where they shift into secong gear while sitting on the spot... it allows easier transition and takeoff aswell... only when you give it enough juice to shift back into first it will...

MGM.. dont listen to ur other mate. he's hant got a clue.

my work car is a BA XR8 ute, auto, that i use at DECA with our club for motorkhanas.
and it must be doing ok, as it's been 3rd outright at the last 2 DECA days, against some nice XR6's, XR8's, GT's and F6's.... and remember.... it's a work ute.
this thing gets a hiding, and no damage is ever caused to the auto.

as said before, when u take ur foot off the gas, the torque converter acts like a manual car's clutch, so no drive goes to the wheels.

when im in it, i just lift off, yank the handbrake till it starts to slide, let the handbrake go and nail it!!
biggggggg handbrakeys and power slides every time...

Your mate is not correct.............. the others are - maybe your mate is jealous of your efforts!

Engine failure. Did it in my RWD Mazda 323 and the timing chain tensioner jammed number 3 conrod. Result, one less 323 on the road, couldn't get a replacement engine.
As for the original question, Traffic Police do it when they need to turn quickly. They replace handbrake cables every other service.

MGM if you have a pre-EF don't bother due to the pull-out park brake being a pain to use. Also replace your handbrake cables regularly if you're going to do this!

Auto will be fine.

In your it's unlikely to cause damage , although some cars it may due to the manner in which the brake is applied and where.
