Both my parents sides have been Australian-born for quite a few generations - but if you go back far enough you will find: Scottish / English (dads side) and Irish / German (mums side).

all this talk got me wanting to trace my heritage back. my mum was doing this search on a website and turns out my mums side has been here since early 1800s. her grandmother also talks about a reletive inheriting a fortune but he was a drunk and lost it all. i want to see how far back i can look for my mums side and then try my dads side. its really interesting seeing how far back you can find your roots.

You'll have more success if you start with your fathers side of the family as the family name doesn't change.

Here in NSW we have gov. site called births deaths & marriages which basically goes back to almost first fleet and its free to use over the net. There is also Gov Archives for listing of ships entering Sydney Harbour and the accompanying immigration.

Once you leave Australian shores it becomes very difficult to match who with what and how many sisters and brothers. There are lots of web sites and they pretty well all want to take your money whether you get a result or not.

If you have relatives on the old side - start talking to them and get their memories down on paper cause once they're gone the amount of info in their head can save you years of frustration.

I started my family file about 10 years ago whilst getting over a spinal injury - nothing better to do - now I have a PC data base of over 500 members with photos for about 10% but that will get improved (photography is a hobby). I have records dating back to 1811 and from a 2nd cousin of mine (civil cannon VI) I can trace a relationship back to Louis 4th of France albeit through my grandmothers side of the family.

If you are really serious about this you can always send a PM and I give some pointers on where to start and which programmes to use.

wow thanks mate, my fathers side came here in the 60's so i'll have to ask my grandparents about thefamily. i'd love to look back and find out about my background. i'll ask my grand parents from both sides and maybe they might still have some living relatives. my mum was going to become a member of this site but she found out it charges. i'm not in a big hurry but its the kind of thing i'll take my time with. maybe start off with my family now and branch out by trying to find out about my ancestors. i'll deffinantly take up your offer when i start searching. thanks mate.

English - Birmingham to be precise.
My family tree has been traced back to the time of Henry the 8th thanks to old shire records and the government digitising all existing records.
