Camera mounting

I've been wanting to mount a video camera in my Ute for a while now, mainly cos of the track days I do. Has anyone done this or anyone got any thoughts on a sturdy way of installing one?

Bracket off the restraint points behind the seats, au's have them not sure about BA's ???

Grunter has a Camera that attaches to the outside of his car. He has shot some very very impressive clips with this on xrclub outings at the track.

i made a bracket that goes onto the head rest bars and cam is located in the middle of the car but u can aim it to see the gauges and the road ahead. also mad a bracket to hang it on the bottom of the door to look past the rear wheel and road, all i saw was white smoke and black marks LOL

Yeah BA's have 'em and thats where I have been thinking of making up some sort of bracket. Did you only have the bracket coming off those points? Or did you also have any vertical bracket, say, down to the seat mounting points? I was just thinking of vibrations thats all?

If you are really serious I had a fried who had a car mount camera kit. It looked kinda like a spider with suction cams on the legs (big mofo caps at that) and could be mounted and locked in place inside or outside the car. He used them to film the porche club at mallala a few times.

I would imagine it would be pretty expensive though and I have no idea where it came from.

What I did.. which worked nicely was the following:

two pieces of metal with holes drilled through them for some long bolts and wing nuts to tighten. Get an old camera tripod head which has a screw thread or similar suitable for your video camera. Work out a way to attach this to the pieces of metal.

line the two metal bars with a rubber strip and then clamp in around the passenger head rest bars which go into the passenger seat back. Attach your camera to the old tripod head and away you go.

I think Simon (Mad_Kiwi) had/has something like this as well...

Worked out really well with my digital camera, would work excellently with anything that has image stabilisation.

Back onto topic: Dya have a camera yet? Either way, how much would one of those setups cost? I've got a friend who does some, uhh, let's call it "Unsponsored Rallying" and for me to hold a camera would mean ballast. I've only got a digital camera, which is hardly ideal for videos, but I spose if you have a proper -- and small -- video camera, the end results would be unreal!

Realistically I think me & my mate will just make up some kind of bracket for my camera to be attached to...

Take the headrest off, sit the cam on the top of the seat and put the head rest on taking care to put the rod through the hand strap. Push down until it clicks and holds the camera firmly. It's all foam padded and doesn't move. And it costs nothing

I use a Panasonic camera which is pretty small, if your camera is bigger it may not work.

ah, i see none of you have heard of 'montycam' (tm)

take one old passenger seat headrest from the wreckers, strip all the foam/material.
there's a steel plate inside it, put it in a vice and bend it forwards, so it sits a little past 90deg to the legs of the headrest. drill a hole in the centre of the plate that suits the size bolt that threads into the base of your camera.

I made one to suit my EB's seat. i have vids of cruise's through town, out in the country, doing burnouts, the vids are awesome, no vibrations or anything, and you can remove it in two seconds. (very good if you spot cops and you want to hide the evidence lol)

This is great guys, I've got all your responses on paper so I'll look into them and see what I can come up with. I like the suction cup idea, that's already got me thinking....
The camera is probably a bit big to fit under the head rest or inside the head rest, but I'll throw the thinking cap on and get to it.

mind you they SUCK **** - cos they REFUSE to deal with anyone outside of the US due to what they claim 'MAY' be credit card fraud. I've tried arranging to get gear sent to me, using a LOT of different methods but in short they only want to deal with US only.
I've looked almost everywhere on the net for like type devices, & here's 2 urls that seem to be the original manufacturers.

If you mount the camera outside the car, it's easy to lose the perspective of what you normally see through the windscreen. I've done a few videos over the years, and one of the most eerie looking ones was where I gaff-tapped the camera to the bonnet.

I've always used sedans/wagons to mount a tripod between the front seats. Mounting on the dash is too far forward - loses perspective.

If you can hang a bracket between the seats at the right height, you'd be laughing.
