Default MSN 7 Virus

Had a runin with it tonight, im using the latest MSN so im not sure if it affects other versions - basically whoever you are talking to will start sending you links that are similar to " http://www.coolkid1.sytes.net/pictures?php(your email address)", and will say 'it's you!'.

Whatever you do, dont click on these links! Your contact is not sending them to you - they dont even know they're there, so be careful about what links you accept from the people you talk to.

MSN appears to be down at the moment, maybe they are working on patching it.
Thanks for the tip.

do you only use the patch if one of your contacts unknowingly sends you the link, or should you use it straight away?

Oh right, sorry. You just use that tool if you have been sent the link and clicked on it and therefor become infected

I just got hit by the virus.. well i was actually the one who gave it out to 15 people on my contacts list, and I started receiving messages like "U moron, wat u sending me viruses for" etc from my contacts.... I didn't know it happened, it just came up on screen and opened a conversation with all my contacts who are online and sent them the link saying something like "rofl is this u?" I'm downloading that symmantec fix now. What I wouldn't give to meet one of those low-life scums who create viruses... All i need is 20 seconds with them.... :

It is because of the way they release software. It isn't 100% complete at time of release. They care more about rushing the software to the stores and then patching it later down the track. pErfect example is Win Millenium and the upcoming Longhorn (they canned the new filesystem till the next release). By this time the crackers have already got the source down pat and are working on ways to exploit the vulnerabilities of the software. Windows 64 bit isn't released as yet but there are viruses already coded for it. So yes MS are to blame for rushed programming. Also they are targeted by crackers i guess cause they are a big business making lots of money.

No matter how secure a program is, whether it be Microsoft or any other vendor/developer, there is always some little snot-nosed script kiddie in a backroom somewhere looking for a way to exploit it.

Currently there are quite a few security holes being reported in both Linux, and Firefox. However, there are't too many bagging them out, users blame the gumbys in back rooms writing virus codes, or spyware, and simply apply the security patches and move on.

Microsoft is a HUGE target, not just for the ****ers writing this stuff, but those who want to have a whinge, it seems.

It's a sign of the times in which we live, that after the operating system/office software, the most important programs on our computers are anti virus/adware/spyware software.....not to mention patches and updates to secure our systems from attackers and thieves. In no way is this the fault of Microsoft (although I do see the point of what you say about early release), or any other company. It just happens more often with Microsft because there are more tossers out there trying to find ways of screwing with the vulnerabilities.

It is these bloody IT Terrorists who disrupt our daily lives with attacks on software by a company they despise purely because of it's success, not the company itself. Just be thankful that the software developers are providing patches so quickly, there was a time this was not the case.

Exactly couldnt have said it better, being in IT, 3/4 of the users look for someone to blame for there own stupidity.

And im sure there are probably the same ammount of bugs/holes/issues with Linux/unix/solaris and OSX

but these dont get put in the media as often.

I couldn't agree more. viruses , spam, etc are becoming the norm and very annoying. No one is safe (even mobiles are now being attacked). The only system i have heard little if any attacks about is the good old mainframe. MVS, MSP, etc.

not really. there are bugs/issues with all software but windows has more due to their policy on software development (which is the only thing that irks me about MS). As I said they want to be the first out with anything and leave any bugs in the code, relying on patches to fix them. I am in IT as well and the amount of patches applied to Unix and Linux systems is no way near the amount compared to Windows. Linux being open source means more people can find vulnerabilities and attempt or suggest ways to fix it. Thye have access to the source code unlike proprietry Windows and some Unix. Any thats my opinion based on my experiences with a wide range of OS.
