I believe some, but not all, Blu Ray players will have 24p output. They will play 24p movies but output them at 25p and 30p. I don't think the PS3 has 24p output.

porn supporting HD DVD means nothing, its not VHS vs BETA anymore.....we have the internet and tv where its all free

bluray having larger capacity, faster data transfer and more bigger brand names supporting this new technology expect to see this in stores after the war has ended

DVD player FTW

from what i understand in the bluray vs hddvd.. any movie you can get on hd-dvd you can get on bluray but vice versa is not the case. in other words theere are blu-ray exclusive movies but not hd-dvd exclusive movies. We must remember that sony entertainment actually produces movies and with the current dvd technology, royalties are payed to toshiba to use this technology. In the new HD era, sony wants to stray from paying these royalties to other companies and hence fundind r & d into their own technology - blu ray...

The beautiful thing about PS3 is that it is more future proof. Already with each firmware update, bluray compatibility and performance is enhanced. already the thing can provide 1080p upscaling. so in the future we can expect to see more and more firmware updates to keep up with the standalone players.

PQ is great on the PS3.. you also have the added ability to surf the net, media share and play games. you would be mad to spend the same money on a standalone.

originally i thought bluray was a ****, but after getting a ps3 for games and trying bluray out, the difference in both picture and sound, even on a 1080i panel, it is just plain impressive.

hook a ps3 up to a samsung m8 series or sony x-series tv and be dumbfounded... into the blue... high def jessica alba in bikini.. what else could be better?

as for porn, their format will adapt to market trends....

remember behind hd-dvd are companies like toshiba, microsoft, intel, nec, paramount, universal and warner bros

behind blu-ray are: sony, sony pictures, panasonic, hitachi, dell, hp, pioneer, phillips, samsung, MGM and disney...

it will be interesting...

worthy of note is a new player LG is releasing capable of playing both formats...

well this is so confusing , after reading all of this .i'm stumped . now i learn that blue ray and HD DVD are differant is this correct . also . big screens are now prometed as HD at 1324 x 766. but not full HD @ 1920 X 1080 p or i . MY PLASMA SCREEN IS 1024 X 1080 i. this is just rediculously hard . and now DVDS are something like 720 x 500 format . which is less than HD TV .

AND IT GOES ON AND ON AND ON AND ON ....

The LG BH100 has copped some bad press, as they rushed in and got theirs on the market first, but it doesnt access any of the interactive material on HD DVD's, and a few others things.

Samsung BD-UP5000 apparently is a keen competitor as it is fully functional with either format

haha, too true

and this is my life right now working in this stuff..

I love my ht gear, I have opted to wait and see what other players hit the market, if I were to get one now I would have to say it'd be the Sony PS3, but only due to the value for money factor getting internet/gaming in the same unit!

When people claim Blu Ray as a ****, thats exactly what they are doing - setup correctly (ie cables, matching res etc) with the right screen, you will be blown away, think more impressive from VHS to DVD (and they said what could be better back then lol) and obviously it's not made to blow you aay running composite on a 68cm crt LOL!

Dream machine would be a blu ray/hd dvd recorder but whats the odds of that, and imagine the coin it'd set us back to obtain.

For now, I'll wait till the market gets its first wide branded release or wait till i can score a ps3 nice n cheap haha.

1. HD DVD and BluRay both have "exclusive" titles, because of the different companies supporting one or the other, or both (for example, The Matrix is HD DVD only, and Pirates of the Carribean is BluRay only).

2. Unless you have a decent plasma or LCD, its certainly not worth looking at either.

3. Sony's record on formats in the past hasn't been too grand (BETA, MiniDisc, UMD is pretty much a failure as well)

4. Alot of people dismiss the adult industry as a big influence, but the failure of BETAMAX over VHS is largely due to Sony not wanting anything to do with the porn, and we might see a repeat?

At the end of the day, a PS3 is a great option, but remember, for less money, you can get a Xbox360 and HD DVD addon.

Well HVDs (the next generation) Holographic Versatile Discs should be out in 5-10 yrs, so this format war shouldnt last too long. By the time a winner between Blu Ray and HD-DVD is declared, HVD will be out to support 4320p resolution.

I was at Harvey Norman the other week and seen the new HD players in action, Blu-Ray is awesome the picture is just the best thing you can see.. Zoom in and see such small bit moving that you couldn't see before, The things moving in the screen seem to be alive and you can almost see them jumping out of the screen in front of you.. I couldn't move for 20min watching it.

I already think some of the pictures on high end tv's look TOO clear and actually look crap in the end because of it. Meh.

Personally I wouldn't buy either and wait till everything settles. Blu-ray could be the next big thing, or, like the mini disc, it could not.

Waiting for things to settle.. lol

This isn’t the mid to late nineties where all we had on the consumer level was crt with no big rush to get a new and innovative/exciting product out to wow the tech's and make some coin.

I really think those days are long gone, there is always something new, around the corner that you might say 'I’ll wait for' and there is always going to be more than 1 technology that is available.

Settle? I don't see it.

I honestly hope I'm wrong as it will save you (and even me) plus billions of others a heap of stress/mucking around/procrastinating!

The ps3 is already better.

When the Firmware was updated to 1.80 a few weeks back, Sony included the ability to "Upscale" normal DVD's. Which in turn allows for better quality picture. From your standard DVD. The feature also works on older PS1 and PS2 games, making the textures slightly better.

The Ps3 also has the advantage of being able to stream media off your PC, allowing you to watch home movies or those "Special" movies you might find around the internet.

And surfing the net, with Keyboard and mouse can be done in the comfort of your lounge room on the PS3
