I have just purchased a mk1 escort, and am finding the factory brakes to be insufficient for hills driving. does anyone know if you can fit late model cortina brakes to the mk1? or is there any other cheap bigger brake conversion? would be interested in any info -cheers

Check out ebay, they have a Esky brake upgrades for around $800 or Hoppers Stoppers have Esky kits for $1500.
The Hoppers Kit will need a min of a 15inch wheel to clear rotor and caliper, im not sure about the ones on Ebay though.

Getting good brake pads for ovloV is harder these days...
Plenty of parts fit.. The Capri struts bolt straight in...

As far as I know the floor pan of the Escort hails back to the Anglia and includes early Capri's and Cortina's (I'm not sure about Prefect's But I think so) and so nearly all parts are interchangeable. I had a Mk 1 P/V a few years ago and found by converting it to all to Mk 2. 2 litre spec (eng, g/box, diff, Brakes and susp.) I had built a fire breathing monster to take on V8's and flay em! (The Gas Reasearch system helped!) The brakes were ok but I wanted better! Cured it by fitting a booster/master unit out of a Datto Stanza SSS! The master looks exactly the same as the master off an Xf Falcon but it comes attached to a nice compact booster that is not too hard to fit where the original one went.
Be warned asking too much from solid discs can lead to disaster! I also went thru the D.B.A. catolouge and found '83 light ace (Toyota) had a vented disk that matched the MK 2 disks dimentions (2 or 3 mm bigger in dia and from memory about 21 mm thick) The idea was put 11 mm spreader plates in the calipers (To clear the extra thickness) and re-drill the hubs to match the new disks. I never tried it but cos I wrote off my beloved Eskie and gave the remains to a Mate! These are on a shoestring budget, If you have the money go for the after market suggestions in the posts above! REMEMBER above all else, these are brakes you are playing with here, if you can't stop YOU ARE DEAD! If you are not confident about your abilities DON'T play with them and pay a specialist to do your mods, you'll live longer that way! Cheers Mick ;-)) |

I had Capri front struts, same part # as twin cam...
In the back we fitted Fiat 1800 diff with disc brakes.. Was a rallycross car where the rear brakes do alot of work...
