Ablett was crying because he wanted to win back to back, not because he did win the brownlow.
I personlly think he WAS better than Hodge, if he or Hodge didn't get one extra touch, and Geelong won, Ablett would have won the Normsmith, it's hard to give the Normsmith to a loosing side.
Had Geelong not been so wasteful, they would have been in front by nearly 3 goals 5 mins into the third qtr, not behind, that would have changed the entire mindset of the players would have had the momentum and most likely ran away with......... But, we didn't. You get that.

Hawthorn probably played the're best game of the entire year, we didn't.

I personally think there is not too many teams next year that will challenge Geelong & Hawthorn unless they have a bad run of injuries. No we both have a good few years to come.

Oh, and I also think the Brownlow doesn't reflect jack s*%t on how good player has been through the year.

Congratulations Crawf, End it on a high.

Every team needs receivers otherwise the game would stand still. Calling Franklin a receiver is just a load of crap, how many of his goals were running snap shots etc. He is in the forward line so how else is he meant to get the ball if not delivered to him, grow up.
The best team won on the day, simple as that..end of story.

Thought I'd add this lovely reply too that

Quote:
The match day report against Hawthorn's Sam Mitchell for making forceful contact from front-on against Geelong's Gary Ablett was reviewed. It was the view of the panel that Mitchell's bump was caused by circumstances outside the control of the player, which could not be reasonably foreseen, in that Mitchell was pushed by Geelong's Cameron Ling into the contact with Ablett. On the viewing of further vision that was made available today, Mitchell tried to reduce the impact by attempting to slow down before contact was made. Mitchell did not turn side-on to bump Ablett. It was the view of the panel that the bulk of the contact was between Mitchell's ribs and Ablett's right shoulder. There was some contact between Mitchell's forearm and Ablett's head but that was seen as self-protection by Mitchell by the panel. No further action was taken.
Notice the bold part? who's the pathetic one now? he he

It wasn't only me. The non-one-eyed supporter next to me even said Mitchell was a dirty little man.
There is also no mention of the coathanger.

I am not working on blood or looking with one eye.

You also misinterpreted my pathetic call. I never called Mitchell pathetic. I called his actions pathetic. Vast difference. Note the use of "it" and not "he".

You on the other hand have tried to label me as pathetic.

Insults and name calling are not productive and have no place here.

re-read the bold part maybe? i was referring to LING as the pathetic one as he pushed Mitchell.. and even if you called his actions pathetic the quote from the afl sums up his actions tbh, he actually tried to stop the bump after being pushed.

He still coat-hangered Ablett, which was still pathetic.
Ling also did not wish to cause harm. It was called a contest.
I'll settle and say Mitchell didn't mean that one...fine. But Ling was just contesting. What Ling did wasn't pathetic as a push at worst is a minor-infringement.

GO the Hawks...

You sir are a troll.

Stick to an adult like argument .

As much as you dislike Gary Ablett, maybe you should show some respect to a profesional football player who is obviously VERY good and was certainly very close to being the Norm Smith medalist on Saturday. Don't tell me the bloke didn't try his heart out !!

Of course you probably are a 2.5 metre tall, 200 kg, mountain of muscle that has never cried in their life, and who would laugh after taking place in a losing AFL Grand Final.

Perhaps next time you should show some humility and manners and make your point with some facts........

BTW FYI: shore is at the sea, sure means you really know what you are talking about. Prity = ??? Pretty means 'really nice'.

Any bloke who's afraid to cry is less of a man than the one who shows emotion. I'm a passionate man, and I'll admit that sometimes, with my passion, emotion gets the better of me. I cried when Geelong lost on the weekend, just as I did through the 90's with all the other GF losses. If that makes me less of a man in someone elses eyes, then so be it.

It's funny, a year is a long time in Footy. Last year I bet most of you Hawks supporters who are bagging Geelong now, were in fact going for Geelong against Port. I've heard it all before, I remember last year "lets bring the cup back to Vic". And "don't let those interstate scum get the cup again". But this year it would appear that most people are back off the Geelong bandwagon since there was two Victorian teams in it. Well, atleast I'll take solace in the fact that the country bumpkins are better than the "interstate scumbags".

it doesn't matter how many jumped on or off the bandwagon. only one team at present has held the cup after geelong have. a 1st and a 2nd over 2 years is not a bad effort

i would love to be in your position - just three of your achievements will do. a minor premiership, also a grand final and premiership in my life time. i have not seen two of those and none of our fans have seen the first

it is hard but geelong fans should forget about the weekend and just remember that they have recently scored what is likely to be the biggest grand final victory ever

I've seen 5 grand fina losses and 1 grand final win. It hurts seeing so many seasons go down the toilet, but it could have been 6 grand final losses, now THAT would hurt! Don't worry dude, I've got the 07 GF DVD playing over and over again hehe. And as for last years grand final victory likely to be the biggest ever, well it is! Until someone else wins by more, or the AFL goes defunct, I'm sure it's going to be the biggest that you or I will ever see. But I'd take away 30 points and put it on our end score last Saturday in a heart beat.

BTW, There's no team i'd like to see (besides the Cats of course) win a premiership more than the Doggies. I could be wrong, but I think it will be a two horse race next year, and it will be the Hawks v Cats in 09 as well.

I thought Gary Ablett, Joel Selwood and Mat Scarlett were best on ground for the Cats. For the Hawks Chance Bateman was a standout, but most of their players just went for broke.

It was a good game and I wasn't disappointed to see Hawthorn give a bit of biff, because that is how I remember them.

Although some of the decisons were patently wrong, the umpiring was overall very good.

Insofar as comments about the Brownlow, well with all our biased caps off it really should have been Simon Black. He did get rewarded by getting the ABC Footballer of the Year award, three votes clear of Ablett, which is no mean feat. I doubt many players would argue Simon is one of the most skilled and fairest footballers they've encountered.

Its finals footy and at finals time you have to step it up. Hawthorn did that in all three finals games.

We played all three teams that beat us during the season and beat them all.
They played better footy against the dogs in the first final..

Geelong lost because they were beaten by their opponents fair and square and kicked poorly.

That sums it up pretty well, they had Hawthorn on the ropes but continually failed to land the couple of killer blows it needed to blow the game open like they have done all year. After Ottens missed that easy goal he could have just dribbled in and slotted, and Mooney missed from bang in front the rot really started to settle in and the yips just kept coming. Geelong had the game by the scruff of the neck but just failed to put the score on the board. 1 goal 9 points for the 2nd quarter showed that. But all credit to Hawthorn as they failed to wilt under the pressure and just kept at it until it started going their way. They never gave up.

The Geelong players must be rueing the opportunities they had to put the game on ice.

Bring on a replay for next year, Cats Vs Hawks GF '09.

WELL DONE HAWKS!!

Just finished reading the post GF stuff and cant help but remember the one eyed Geelong stuff from after the 07 GF, shoes on the other foot now hey lads...
You thought you had it in the bag!!

I'm not a Hawthorn supporter but i most certainly am an Alastair Clarkson supporter..best coach in the game!
Having followed his career from premiership coach with the SANFL club Central District, assistant to Chocko @ Pt Adelaide in 04 and now premiership coach in 08 at AFL level, he is the real deal, a true players coach and great people manager.

I think they got it wrong with the Norm Smith too. Hodge was good but the massive left boot of Stewart Dew broke the game open after half time(the so called premiership quarter) with a handful of quick goals and assists which Geelong weren't expecting.
I've seen him do the same thing in successive GF's under Alastair at Centrals and in the 04 Power flag, he's a GF specialist who flies under the radar and Alastair knew it when he went against the youth policy to lure him back to AFL.
In fact i'd go as far as to say Dews exodus from Alberton and AFL may have been Clarkson inspired.

As for Buddy being a reciever, pfft.. Adelaide for the last decade has had arguably one of the most settled, consistent and potent mid fields in the game (Mcleod, Edwards, Goodwin, mattner, Bickley, stenglein etc.) yet they have consistently failed to kick winning scores over the decade as they have had mediocre key forwards and therefore built their game around small forwards and running midfield goals.
I dont think many would knock buddy back if the opportunity arose.

Last but not least, Buckley won the NS in a losing GF so it can happen and recently too.

Just to add. Buddy got pinged for quite a few free kicks against him. Could easily have kicked a few more goals if Scarlett didn't act so well. Buddy is not such a good actor himself. He tried to get a free kick but it was the worst acting i've ever seen lol.

Yeah and I remember when Buddy dumped on of the Geelong players (can't remember who), totally removed him from the contest. This was in the last quarter when the Hawks had the game sewed up by then so it didn't matter anyway. But I certainly don't think the Hawks got the raw end of the deal from the umps. I think it was pretty even to be quite honest, even if on paper Geelong got more. Anyway you guys have your flag, there's no point in arguing petty insignificant things. Just remember you guys will be the hunted next year by the whole competition, and Geelong WILL be out for blood!

That was back in the days when the NS voting finished at 3/4 time. After his dismal effort in the 4th it left a sour taste in a lot of people's mouths and now NS voting is done at the end of the game.

Received this in an email. A great read

Quote:
My fellow Australians,

I've been invited here to talk to Centre Square, in these big marquees on Punt Road Oval. And speaking of Punt Road Oval, let me tell you something for nothing - Jack Dyer would be spinning in his grave if he could see the place right now. Full of a bunch of Collins Street corporate criminals, Chapel Street designer cats and Toorak poodle rooters who have about as much interest in football as Paris Hilton has an interest in astrophysics. Captain Blood didn't break every bone in his body and commit multiple acts of on-field heroism and homicide so he could see his beloved home ground turned into an over-priced pre-match party for chardonnay-swilling spivs and their assorted hangers-on attending their one footy match of the year, whilst tens of thousands of hard-working honest battlers who love the game and love their team are denied the chance to attend the greatest game in the world.

I've had a gutful. Whilst this bunch of Armani-wearing, Audi-driving, Prada-carrying try-hards monopolise priceless vantage points in the MCG, millions of genuine footy fans who have followed their team through thick and thin have to make do by watching the game at home or down at the local pub, whilst the Melbourne spivocracy get to sit on
their fat posteriors in a marquee and wouldn't even know the way to the MCG
without a tour guide.

Since most of you haven't attended a single match this year and know nothing about football, let me give you a few tips - Geelong wears blue, Hawthorn wears brown, and in case you were wondering, there'll be no fashions on the field at half-time, and no, the Lexus Centre across the road is not a prestige car dealership. Centre Square is not
only unfair. Centre Square is not only inequitable. Centre Square is downright un-Australian! And so are all of you! In fact, I bet you're all so un-Australian that you all hate the Anzacs, you booed Cathy Freeman, and you want to cull cute cuddly koalas because one of them once jumped out in front of your Range Rover on the way to Mount Hotham.

But it's not just you who are at fault. I also blame the AFL - those out-of-touch, opera-loving elitists at AFL headquarters who are responsible for this unconscionable abomination need to take a good hard look in the mirror. That is if they can handle the sight of moral and spiritual bankruptcy staring back at them.

I also blame the government. Our new Prime Minister has clearly failed his first test of leadership if he thinks it's acceptable to allow an event like this to go ahead without a pre-emptive strike by the SAS. The PM is doing nothing to ease the squeeze on working families on the bottom rung of the ladder of opportunity who just want to see their
team in the Granny. But he'd better get his act together and do something about it, or millions of angry footy fans will do it for him.

Revolutions have been started and governments have been overthrown for lesser outrages than this. And people ask why we need capital punishment.

So cut off your silver tails, tear up your fur coats and get fair dinkum. Our great Australian game is the greatest game in the world -
the game of the people. Not some once-a-year marquee -up for an overpaid, over-dressed pack of passionless corporate cretins who only turn up for the free chardonnay and then spend the actual game looking about as interested and excited as a line of Easter Island statues.

So don't bother coming across to the MCG this afternoon, because you're not welcome. The next train out of Melbourne leaves Richmond station in 10 minutes - so make sure you're on it. Or, better still, under it. So don't be un-Australian - everyone here in Centre Square can get stuffed!

You know it makes sense.

I'm Sam Kekovich.
