Why do people take the rear spoiler off their XR Falcon/SS Commodore/Skyline/WRX and then cover the holes up with tape?
Is the tape more aerodynamic than the spoiler and does the car go faster as a result? This has been bugging me for a while now and I would love to hear a logical explanation for it.... |

you would think they would just leave it as a spoiler would look better

They're called spoilers for a reason. They spoil the look They're alright on some cars if it suits them. Don't see the point of them triple decker spoilers on lot of imports.
You can't order a SS without a spoiler because all the boots have holes drilled out in them already. Might be cheaper to buy an Omega boot in the same colour instead of paying a panel beater to fill in the holes.

maybe its just temporary? ever think of that?
may have been, "lets do this and see what it looks like/what people think" or "im on my way to get the panel welded up" |

And to think 10-15 years ago you had to pay extra for a spoiler...
some people use blind grommets, i have seen silicon on one too. Personally i reckon the whole big rims, no spoiler and dump it so you cant go over a kerb/speedhump is a joke, but then i again i've never been one for cosmetics or good looks. :

personal choice i think really...but i rather think the stock spoiler on the XR and SS/SV6 looks great on the car..there are some cars that i agree dont look good with spoilers, thats why they didnt come out of the factory with one...for example the other day i saw a huge wing on the back of a honda civic...reminded me of a shopping trolley...

spoilers look crap, create drag, ruin your boot struts and the fiberglass only ends up cracking anyway, they hide the sleek lines of your car, they reduce your rear visibility, they aren't actually effective as a downforce implement on a normal roadgoing car, unless you're doing 300
but other than that, i have no idea why people take them off.

I changed mine to the Typhoon style. It's just personal preference.
I like the spoilers on the XRs. Without them they look like an XT, but again that's just my personal taste. XF Falcon's XR looks unreal though.

Personally I think spoilers on the XR's and commonwhores actually look great. I think XR's ( and particularly falcons with the FPV wannabe kit used: ) look silly as the rear looks as if it is missing something to complete the body kit IMO. I guess no spoiler and plugs in the holes is regarded to be fully sic?

Could be the spoiler is damaged and brake light in them doesn't work !!
To get through rego they remove them and fit rear window light if it doesn't have one.. A spoiler and brake light can be expensive on top of rego !! Me I prefer them on ...

I think some cars especially BA's and 90's series WRX's look good without the spoiler, my new sportivo has a spoiler and I think it would look crap without it. Some cars suit them others don't.

I believe that although the spoilers don't add downforce they can lower the drag coefficient a couple of points. I know that was the case with AU as I remember reading about the various AU XR wings when they were released. The single plane wings reduced drag a bit and those biplane wings actually gave about 15lb of downforce if I recall but don't quote me on that figure. Although the biplane wing went I'd assume the spoiler on BA/BF etc. would be similar in reducing drag. I can't speak for any of the other manufacturers but it wouldn't be a huge leap to think that spoilers on most of the others would ,if not lower drag, at least not add to it. Bushbasher

Lowered, the last few Falcons and Commodores can look rather good with the spoiler removed. I'd probably never do it myself but they are only cosmetic and really do hamper visibility. I like that some people take some initiative with their cars and mod it tastefully.

i drove around with white tape which matched my cars color for a couple weeks whilst having my DJR wing prepped and painted. Hated it , looked OK from afar cos you couldnt see the tape but up close it bugged me. Also shat me off the day someone poked a hole in the tape and it rained heavily and i didnt bother taping the underside cos why would you .. stinky wet boot = not happy

Id say the tape is stop leaking into the boot via spoiler holes.
I also guess I should have read the above post before posting, lol.
