Just out of curiosity.... Has anyone on these forums been affected by these floods in Gawler River Area / Virginia / Angle Vale? I have to travel down Port Wakefield Road every day and this morning I had to take a massive detour because they had closed the entire road off.
Just wondering if anyone has more info about it?

I haven't personally. I've noticed a 'river' down here has reached it's max, looks amazing.
I was just woken by rain and hail tho... not happy Jan. |

I live Gawler East, which is a hill, so not personally affected. Except by the water up to my ankles in the Ford.
However yes Gawler in general has been badly affected; the scene on the news the other night of John Riddell at Dead Man's Pass standing where there used to be a road is a five minute stroll from my place - and where the AMBULANCE STATION (was). I went for a walk the other night to see the devastation while the flood was just after its peak. Wish I took a camera some of the scenes were awesome, although to post them on hear a before/after shot would be even better. I wonder if photoshop can help me now... I understand these normally virtually dry creek beds flow out to Virginia, etc., and someone told me they demollished part of the railway mound out there in order to prevent 300-odd Virginian homes getting flooded. Instead it went down to Buckland Park and flooded 30-odd. I haven't been out that way to see though. Its an awesome sight seeing water as far as you can see with buildings and fences coming out - and fully functioning street lights (that bugs me); there must be some pics around I'll see if I can get hold of any... |

My father is in Lewiston, right in the flood zone, first day he was hemmed in on 4 sides and couldnt get to work.
I live next to the torrens river, and it was looking mighty vicious.

I'm dumbfounded why the Gawler Council would allow people to build on Goose Island or whatever its called at the end of 8th St. It was washed away in 92, and now; and that area gets wet everytime it rains anyway - so you gotta wonder about the people's choice to build there in the first place. "Oh look, here's a nice place for a house - higher than the water, lower than the bridge" - yeah the bridge got proper fckd too. And I'm not sure what insurance companies have to say about SA Brewery's Xmas display floating away; or the $40 Million of "crops" out Virginia/Angle Vale way. Sourbastard - glad your dad wasn't washed away, would have been a panic squared off like that. I know the choppers were at the schools out there, but were there any evacs or just paddocks flooded? |
