Question AC 240V charging question

I plugged in my camping lantern to recharge it (it's an Arlec RDL2 for reference) and after a while checked back to see how it was going.

The side of the lantern (not switched on during charging) was very bloody hot. I've never noticed this before.

I unplugged it from the charger, and picked up the charger/transformer and the back of it was so hot I almost burnt myself. I unplugged the charger itself and even now having had 1/2 an hour to cool down it is still very warm.

The charger is not the one for that lantern, but the input-output is the same. Now here's the funny thing, I went and dug out the charger that came with the lantern, and not only is the input-output the same (12V DC @ 500mA) it is from the same manufacturer and has the same part number!

So I've now got it charging on the Arlec charger to see what happens. Do I have a dud charger or is something in the lantern stuffed? Something tells me its the latter...

...ahem...I think I've spotted the problem...

If the other charger is indeed "the same maker and same part number" then I would suspect one of them is a dud...

Some chargers have the center pin as positive, some have the center pin as negative.

something to watch out for.
