The figures are among a raft of data now available on the state's open data website which Mr Newman trumpets as an example of his administration's transparency.
People can now also access extensive vehicle registration details by postcode. For example, the database for 4060 - Ashgrove's postcode - lists 9237 registered vehicles. Advertisement Although the specific address and registration number are not revealed, the list does state the suburb and the type of each vehicle along with its make, model, year, colour, weight and number of seats. It even includes details of commercial excavators, motorised wheelchairs and trailers. http://www.brisbanetimes.com.au/quee...213-2bcod.html http://data.qld.gov.au/dataset/vehic...1-ba3adbed658e

Just a nice little shopping list for the crooks. What are they thinking?
Once they know the area that they're stored in, all they need to do is 'walk the dog' and locate.

[QUOTE=csv8;4553010]The figures are among a raft of data now available on the state's open data website which Mr Newman trumpets as an example of his administration's transparency.
How is being able to access personal vehicle details a "example of HIS ADMINISTRATIONS TRANSPARENCY"? |

It is interesting to follow the thinking here.
When I first saw it I thought: "Good idea, this will help people in the auto industry keep the right sort of spares in stock locally etc.". But now others, who appear to think differently to me, have pointed out that it could be used by crime. Just wondering if a database that has no addresses, regos, names or descriptions other than generic would be better than just sitting opposite a large petrol station or arterial exit with a digital camera taking pics and then via the rego on which anyone can inquire easily find the name and address of the owner, where it is garaged and if I use the insurance system, what it is worth. It is 2012 not 1970, there are no secrets or privacy any more...... |

I had heard rumours about this, thanks for posting the link. After looking at the file for my suburb, I didn't think there was anything that gave away location or owner details apart from suburb.
Yes, I will agree that the serious thief will go to great lengths to garner any info to help their cause - but seriously, I think you would run more risk by driving your pride and joy and risk being followed home. Bracken Ridge appears to be a very boring place to be if you're after a nice car to steal. Bugger, I'll have to keep trolling the forums!

I was able to find my XB in that list!!!!
Looked at my suburb, and found the model and colour (gold). Those who us Xcel spread sheets will know that you can add filters to these sheets, so that you can very easy arrow down the search parameters. I am a bit concerned about publishing this sort of info and have no idea why a government would do so??!??? While some suburbs are huge (making it hard for crims to find a certain car), it can assist them in targetting areas if they wanted to.

When I think of transparency of a government this isnt really what I think of. I think this is transparency of the public being forced upon by the government.

It looks like an ebay shopping list (for thieves).
Dead right. They're not transparent about what they really need to be transparent about and they've made transparent something that doesn't need to be. I guess this boosts their political brownie points for "transparency". I'm surprised at this from a Liberal govt, it's something we'd expect from the other side. |
