I think it's the case that anything relating to anti pollution systems have to have a min ten year design life (warranty?) and in that case I have assumed for quite some time ALL OEM exhaust systems are stainless steel.....is that the case

Nope not stainless steel. Most are mild steel.
The warranty only applies to design faults and does not cover wear and tear. |

So it's not part of the design life requirement, or is lead free petrol less corrosive. I ask cos those exclusive muffler replacement businesses seem to have branched out to brakes suspension etc cos the cold end seems to me to last much longer....

Mr Muffler seemed to be everywhere, at least advertise a lot in the 80s, maybe they just last longer.....?

Some of my local exhaust shops only do exhausts, and they are very good at what they do.
Personally I prefer to go to an exhaust only shop for exhaust work, than a jack of all trades workshop, and vice versa, if I didn't service my own cars, I wouldn't take them to an exhaust shop for service work. But to answer your question, no, most oem exhausts are not stainless. Straight LPG cars are probably the worst for rusting through pipes. |

I reckon the reason that exhaust systems last much longer is because of the higher temps that occur with a newer style system (ie with cat converter). Any moisture/condensation is burnt off quicker & therefore leads to less corrosion problems.

"10 years"...?
I remember talking to an engineer who used to do actual testing of vehicles for the ADR's and knew the rules and regs inside out. He said that a brand new car that had been driven by the buyer for six months or so would no longer strictly meet all the ADR's anymore, which were tested on factory fresh cars straight off the production line, especially the emissions and anti-pollution...once they are used for a while, the systems just deteriorate. No enough to affect performance, but enough that they wouldn't still meet the strict ADR requirements. |

I think there is a correct name for what the exhaust on commodore's are made of as their is different grades of this stuff.
As the old type Stainless steel is no good as it splits. Falcons have a cheaper grade steel than commodores. My wife's old VS commo exhaust was never touched in 13 years. My XG ute lasted about 12 months muffler and the manifold to pipe gasket went. An old mate swears that unleaded ate his extractors out from the inside on his WB 3.3L in 3 years, i don't believe that it is true. |
