Usually recalls can be seen a brand being proactive...but thats alot of recalls...and sounds like rushed development in some cases.

I would rather see a company recall their products before it causes injury or death then a class action lawsuit making them recall like the one involving VW Australia.

That's exactly what GM are going through now with their ignition switch recall. I think 7 people have died as a result, and a recall was avoided for years. It's only now that GM have issued a recall. GM have copped a hammering in the US because of this.

I would rather a company build quality products which do not need to be recalled.

OK. But in an ideal world good quality is not measured by the amount of recalls issued or the number of vehicles required.

A quick calculation is over 20 million recalls in under 10 years. Half of that in the last 8 months WOW. So much for GM changing their ways.

2.5 MIZlLION sedan recalls on cars with faulty tail light electrics that disable all your esc,and safety functions.

Most of these recalls are for pretty serious things aswell. No wonder GM has a bad name. There's soooo much hate for government motors over there now. They had a great chance to sort that cheap n nasty culture out of the buissiness too. It appears it's actually flourishing instead.

Personally I've always argued that Holden Australia has had the same terrible leadership as the mothership....but most of you are aware of that but that's another whole different story.

The major one is the redesign of a lock barrel to increase torque to stop the switch going to off/Acc while cars are running.
Airbags don't work with Ignition off so imagine that happens in the lead up to an accident with another vehicle or tree.....

The engineer that signed off on the changes back in 2006 did not allocate a new part number, nor withdraw superseded stock
so GM had no way to track the mix of old and new parts going into new cars.

The whole thing is getting very messy as the NHTSA has now Fined GM $35 million for tardy recalls.
Now GM is going overboard trying to get skeletons out of closets and avoid more law suits.

As an insight into the cost of this fiasco, GM took a $1.3 billion impairment charge out of its profits for First Quarter results

It comes down to a common failing of all US auto makers. Save a dollar today and dam the consequences. Its clearly a management culture of penny pinching and not standing up to be heard, because you'll get your head kicked in by the ones above you. Poor leadership and self interest overriding the long term good of the brand.

Unfortunately we've seen the same mentality creep into US autos Australian operations too from time to time over the past decades, but not with the same potential serious consequences fortunately. Although all three paid a price for that thinking in the Australian market.

I still put the quality of Japanese made cars ahead of most other countries.

Me too mate, im a bit of a toyota fan in the build qaulity department , it is very easy to see the qaulity of components when you pull a few cars to bits.

From memory Ford had a major recall after a lot of deaths with their Pinto and something to do with tyres in USA as well so its not just GM

Yeah , but the pinto was back in the 70s, one would hope car safety has changed considerably since then, personally I think ford put in a much greater effort these day's.

Not to sure about the pinto but Ford did have the tyre separation "blow outs" causing roll overs on the explorers from the late 90's because of bad firestone tyres.

I'd say they got caught out on the tyre one, its not something you would expect, I have fitted firestones over the years and they where fine, but the cookie crumbles that way sometimes.
