Smile Petrol Price .. USA v Europe

Hi Guys .. I'm on a bit of a holiday at the moment. Have just spent a month in the USA driving a Ford Explorer from LA to Niagara Falls and back. Did 6500 miles in all. Now I'm in Europe driving a Peugeot 3008 Diesel.

Thought you might be interested in the difference in Petrol Prices.

In the USA the cheapest price I found was US$3.34 per US Gallon in Sioux Falls South Dakota. This converts to AU$0.94.7 per litre. (Wish we were paying that back in Aus.)

In Europe Petrol is selling in the Netherlands for €1.72 per Litre.
That is AU$2.71 per Litre ... <<<< That is scary!!

Thank god the Peugeot I'm driving here is a Diesel because that is only €1.43 per litre or AU$2.13 per litre. The Peugeot is getting around 6.5 litres per 100k. No wonder they all drive tiny cars here.

If I had my GT over here it would cost AU$184 to fill the tank!

I'll never complain about AU petrol prices again lol.

Cheers Mike

94c a litre..that was the 1990's for us wasnt it!?

Funny how we adapt to our environment, the prime reason we got our C4 over a Territory is because of urban fuel consumption. It does nearly 100% city driving has has never gone over 8L/100..the I6 Tez that was in our range would be double that easy. Hit the highway and it sits on something silly like 4-4.5L.

For the daily commute Im about converted to be honest.

Still, 75L of petrol/diesel/LPG is a lot less than 75L of Jack Daniels, and you can have just as much fun LOL.

I just got back from 3 months touring about in the USA, Europe and the UK. I lived in America 10+ years ago and was shocked to see that fuel is now $3-$3.50 a gallon over there. In the late 90's when I went there first it was <$1! I used to fill up for $10-12.

I found the fuel price in Europe was ok, especially in France where we paid E1.30 per litre typically. The UK though was similar, but in pounds! The A$ buys about 70c Euro and 60pents so Europe was effectively <$2 per litre and the UK was well over it.

FWIW, I rented a petrol Nissan Altima 4 cyl in the states and did 4,000miles from New York to Florida and back. In Europe, I rented a Toyota Verso diesel in Geneva and must have come close to 10,000km in 2months and got as far as Scotland, Hamburg, Salzburg and Rome. Amazing driving over there. The little Verso (bit like a Prius V) got up to 180km/h on the Autobahn!

I wish we were paying what they pay in Venezuela. 5c per gallon or 1.3c per litre. $1.25 to fill up my F150, that would be sweet. That's really what it should be everywhere.

I used to think I'd never get over high performance cars regardless of the fuel price... and while I'm not over them... I'm over the price of fuel :\

I think I've gotten more fuel efficient over the years (on the whole), even though the cars HP output increased on each vehicle.

First car (VK Commodre) - Fuel = 86c: 20L per 100km

Second car (AU Fairmont Ghia) - Fuel = $1.20: 16L per 100km

Third car (VY SV8) - Fuel = $1.40: 15L per 100km

Fourth car (F6) - Fuel = $1.60+: 13.8L per 100km

Wife's Hyundai Excel: 8-9L per 100km

It seems Netherlands is very expensive at the moment so I wouldn't take it as representative:

http://www.fuel-prices-europe.info/index.php?sort=4

There's quite a bit of variation within Europe, you can't generalise. Two years ago I was commuting between Germany and Czech Republic. Look at the table and guess which country I always filled the car up in! You can even buy the same international train ticket much cheaper in one country than the other.

Perhaps Australia ought to separate itself into seven different countries!

I converted it all to litres and Australian dollars/cents.

USA use Gallons as per your quote above.
EU use Litres same as Australia
UK also sell petrol in Litres.

I'm going over to the UK in July so will let you know what it costs there then.
Canada was about 20% dearer than the USA.

Cheers Mike

Yep, thank you.

I first got my P plates in 2004, and I remember regularly paying late-80's - 90c per litre when I was getting around in my 4.1L Cortina. I clearly remember one week when the petrol stations got super competitive and it dropped into the 70's, the cheapest I saw it at my local servo had unleaded for 72c per litre! Those were the days!

It's crazy how fast the price has soared up since then, and it doesn't seem to fluctuate anymore like it used to (down a few cents one week, up a couple of cents the next week).

When comparing our fuel prices with other countries, I guess it's good to take into account average Australian wages vs other countries and that's not as simple as it may seem on the surface. But I believe our wages in (Aussie) dollar numbers are pretty high compared to the US and we do pretty well compared to many other countries.
That said though, I certainly wish it was cheaper.

Unleaded 95 in the UK is currently AU$2.48 per litre.
Diesel is AU$2.70 per litre.

Those are Motorway servo prices. You can get it a bit cheaper if you buy it at the supermarket outlets like Tesco and Sainsbury's.

Would not like to be driving my GT over here. Saw a Vauxhall VXR8 the other day . . First one I have ever seen in the flesh. Took some pics if anyone wants to see them?

Cheers Mike

I'm in France, diesel is just 1.25 euro, that's about aud$1.78, cars we drive here are getting around 5 litres per hundred, so that's fine by me.

Fuel is not so cheap in the USA if you allow for the minimum wage. Over there is about $7.50 per hour. Packing staff at work are on over twice that so US prices suddenly dont seem that fantastic.

Norway is widely known as the dearest fuel in Europe (and lots of other stuff is the dearest too)... I paid $50 for a pizza there.
Can see why the Tesla Model S is being sold in large number there, electricity is very cheap at about 14 cents per kWh)

Yes they do but it's not a big market. One issue is that a lot of Europe's gas comes from Russia - which is somewhat politically problematic at the moment.

Yep, and you can't just say we earn two or three times as much as the yanks either. You have to look at all the costs of living and tax structure to make a valid comparison.
