Who has seen the TV ads for the AAMI safe driver app? Apparently it works by recording the drivers acceleration & deceleration and provides scoring. $100k will be a large magnet and I don't know about more drivers holding up traffic as they try to maximise their score by slow speed driving, rather than driving to the conditions.
Perhaps they should go back to having a person with a red flag walking in front of their car to warn other road users what the muppets are up to... |

From their site.... https://e.insurance-email.com.au/pub...xMY2HC-SNgc2nM. The app uses GPS to record your journeys, noting key driving factors such as length of trips, speed, acceleration, braking and phone use while driving. It then provides you with a driving score

Utter rubbish isn't it. All the app will do is monitor the insured so that if they ever have an accident the insurer can say "well you went 3kms over the speed limit once last year so I'm sorry you're a dangerous driver and high risk so we don't have to pay out". But they disguise it as this gimmicky little road game and guilt as many people as they can into downloading it by claiming its for their, and more importantly their children's safety.

Or they bribe you with 100k. Sorry OP i didn't quite understand that bit till i read the next post. They don't offer that here in nz its just straight download this or you will probably die you horrible driver.
Edit: furthermore they can afford to give away 100k because of all the policies they intend to not pay out. Crooks.

Point taken, so contestants with a score they are not happy with won't try again and continue to be a nuisance on the road.??? |

More correctly bribe you with a chance of $100k! I haven't made a claim in 20 years so unsure how to judge companies, even if there are only two operating thru many brands. One thing I do, is shop around as the "lazy tax" they put on my renewals every year really gets me mad and is frustrating in the effort required to get a reasonable premium, |

The renewal they sent me was $179.07 above their online quote. When I rang to query it their customer service said they couldn’t/wouldn’t adjust the renewal fee. I told them I had no intention of paying the renewal amount and the reply was, "I was entitled to make that decision". As their online quote was the cheapest at the time or within a dollar or so and I'd already completed the on line quote, I then purchased a new CTP on line at the reduced cost and then received a number of postal and text messages informing me my CTP renewal was overdue. I’ll name the insurer – NRMA Next year I’ll make it my business to be more aware and get some quotes earlier in case I want to change company. |

Slow speeds and gentle acceleration can be dangerous, for example when trying to merge onto a freeway. You would not be able to match the traffic speed and could cause an accident. Safe driver app, what a load of bollocks.

I've lost count of the muppets trying to enter the 100km/hr freeway at 60 - 70 and the near accidents... I'd be happier if AAMI expanded their driver training program to all policy holders, much better outcomes for all road users... |

Points for driving slowly?
Well I don't think I would be much good at that game.

We should run a competition to see how low you can make it score for lulz.

Here in NSW using the NSW Government Motor Accidents Authority Green Slip Calculator and my 1971 XY for quoting purposes I got the following quotes for a 12 month Green Slip. AAMI $387.73 Allianz $634.00 CIC-Allianz $620.00 GIO $391.01 NRMA $395.08 QBE $420.00 Zurich $635.00 I keep a record of all my car insurance and rego costs so I can easily see the year to year fluctuations which triggered an alarm this year. The rise in the cost from last year’s NRMA CTP to this year was high, so I checked on-line to see if a mistake had been made. For the last few years since I’ve moved back to Australia I’ve always checked and noticed some big variations between insurers but this year is the first time I’ve noticed my renewal was so much higher than their new customer quote. Last year was also the first time I’d used the NRMA as they had offered me a good quote while I was in their office renewing my International Driver’s Licence. Prior to that I’d had the CTP with AAMI. Next year I’ll be more aware to check early and if they play the same game I’ll take my business to another company. This is the calculator I used. http://prices.maa.nsw.gov.au/# |

There's no way I'm installing that app! I might end up with lots of speeding tickets in the mail

more than likely they suckered you in with an "introductory discount" and this year's is the "real" premium

The cost of their first premium was about the same price as the AAMI one I had at the time, I know as I checked before I accepted the NRMA quote. I didn’t pay for it while I was in their office, I gave them my details there and then I received a hard copy in the post. I then checked it against other quotes on-line before I paid. The renewal they sent was about $180 above the existing premium which I first noticed and $179.07 above their advertised online price when I checked, which simply says to me they hoped I would just pay it without checking. I wonder how many do pay straight up without looking into it, probably enough to make the practice worthwhile. |

What you describe is standard industry practice with premiums and hence the "lazy tax" tag as those who pay without question pay whilst those who switch are rewarded... |

lol
So what happens if its a V8 or turbo etc? Obviously it will take off the line faster then a Honda Accord or a Camry. I take off the line easily enough, get good economy etc but coming off the lights when they turn green, I see other slower cars way back, but im driving to the cars normality Lots of flaws with app

After the two muppets drive down a two lane road at 40km/hr so travelling 20 img under the general road speed limit as I don't know any dual lane 50kmh local roads, vesper wins as it couldn't pull the top off a rice pudding and tapped out at 35 km/hr!!! More mobile road blocks we don't need! |

Isn't funny how insurance companies always tell you (when you're in an accident) to never admit fault, even when you know 100% that it's your fault....

Just for fun I might get the app and use it at work.
As it's based on GPS to measure speed etc, I'd like to see what AAMI scores me after getting up to 850km/h.

Not to mention the rapid acceleration and deceleration
