Just because some says something, doesnt not over rule what is actually written down as regulations. Unless youve got their name and have recorded the conversation it will mean nothing the next time a VicRoads officer pulls you over, and if he's having a bad day he can force you to not to go any further till you get the applicable permits.

Also as I said before it can result in your insurance being void if there is an accident.

I know of a truck driver who had it happen to them because the truck was 30cm too long (due to a bull bar)

Thanks that is a useful document, but its from 2007 they created the Class O vehicle in feb last year, which Naddis has supplied the info above for.
this regulation was brought in for light vehicles. so you don't need a permit.


My issue was the information was not readily available, I would argue that Vic Roads should be stipulating when its first registered that it complies with these Class O regs
there are many Boats on the Roads here that are in the same "Boat"

Whatever mate, there are no exemptions anywhere in the country regarding the 2.5m rule.
Dont be surprised to find yourself regularly pulled over, as I know for a fact the road authorities and the highway cops are all targetting these oversized boats.

Or can be over the 2.5m rule by the thickness of the ropes on the trailer.
This was before the use of straps.

This may be a stupid suggestion, but would it be at all possible to rig up something that loads then tilts the boat?

Nah - forget that idea! The top half of the boat will eventually widen the overall width again if it id angled too far.

My boat trailer is exactly 2.5 wide (Aus built so it complies) and I had to have it put on a flatbed the other day. The driver told me he had an exemption to be wider than 2.5 without signage because they will sometimes carry a 2.5 wide load, so need to be a bit wider to fit it on, just like my boat and trailer.

The Cop has a special app on his phone that tells the dimensions of the boat when you put in the make/model, it would be near impossible to measure with a tape as its sort of an oval shaped boat.
But they did get the tape out for the trailer.
