Position is important...too many people assume that mounting it on the roof is a peachy keen idea. I see plenty of fourbies with four spotlights mounted on the roll bar behind the cab of a ute...with the bottom part of the lights obscured by the roof itself, light just flaring up into the air. They're not lighting up anything in front of them much. They'd probably get more penetration and spread out of two normal spotlights on the bullbar.
But that doesn't scream "look at me" does it...
Light bars mounted just above the windscreen have a huge potential to do little more than blind you in dusty or misty conditions as the light isn't propagating in front of the car, but from right above your sight line.
I work with a guy whose Patrol has a massive light bar, HID kit in the headlights (illegally), two massive spotlights, and two smaller ones between them, as well as bright fogs in the bullbar. People at work joke about how much air actually manages to get through the grill to his radiator, or where he mounted the second alternator to power it all...I mean, come on...

People should really be a bit realistic about spotlights and light bars...if they were, no one would really have anything but good aftermarket headlight bulbs, two good spotlights (a spread and a spot) and a light bar. You save a bit of money too. Scratch that. A lot.

On my ute I run two Roo Lite 220XP lights mounted on the sportsbar and two Roo Lite 220XP lights on my 5 poster bullbar.
Been all over the place and not once have I ever been hassled by the police (which I am really grateful for because the government is clamping down on 5 poster bullbars now which I find stupid considering they save lives in the country and remote areas)

Thank s it is true that ungrade to HId and nice bulbs but in my case it is not a matter of if I will hit a roo or some some thing it is when

so why spend a heap of money on lights and loose that lot I have for the present decided to put new globes into the spot lights and navara light bulbs into the main light s

this is a option that will give me sufficient light and when I hit the wild life i have not lost of lot of cash

I have been in Broken Hill just over 12 years my first trip up the phone system was CDMA and the only way to get reception on the Mildura road was by way of a antenna on the bull bar

So far I have hit 3 roo,s and couple of goats and a fox and a number of rabbits

damage has been minimized by way of a roo bar but I consider my self lucky no injuries

there are lots of local cars driving around town with that dolmio grin ( a bug dent in the center of the bonnet where they hit a roo

One of the roos I hit was in town not far from home and as the drought gets worse the more roos that come into town looking for food

Modern vehicles too have headlights which, to be blunt, are brighter and further reaching than a twenty year old car fitted with a couple of spotlights would have ever been. That's one reason on anything reasonably new you don't need to show off with ten spotlights hanging off the front end.
There comes a point when some people should really take a step back and ask "Am I doing this for safety/better vision, or am I trying to impress people...?"

Oversized five and even six post "look at me I'm a pretend semi" bullbar crackdown? Good thing too, for peoples own good. Your vehicle is supposed to crumple and absorb the forces in a crash or impact with an animal, otherwise the energy gets passed straight on to the squishy meat machine holding the steering wheel, creating greater injuries than you would otherwise have had. A normal steel properly rated bullbar is quite enough.

Not to mention "gross vehicle mass"...there's been a fair bit of discussion on four wheel drive forums in the past about GVM and load capacity and adding ridiculously huge five post steel bars, side bars, extra fuel tanks, kitted out rear sections, extra spare wheels, rear bars, roof racks, etc...and then discovering to their horror that they've almost exceeded the load capacity rating of the vehicle before they even chuck in some passengers and luggage...which will make things "interesting" come insurance claim time when they discover you have had an overloaded vehicle...

Just a point to keep an eye on when adding extras to a car...

2011G6E yes you are correct modern cars do have better lights and in most city situation s they work well but once they go into more remote places that is where they are let down

Also looking at what is out there and what car manufactures put into there cars is a interesting point

many of the luxury vehicle s not have much improved lights so why not put the new improved lights into all cars

The other thing is the prices of spot lights in many cases you pay a huge amount extra just for a set name

Yes I agree some do things light bull bar lights for looks me I am 60 and I really do not care about fashion my goal is to get out and about as safe as possible and i find good lights help with my eyes with standard bulbs my eyes are often watery and sore after 6 or 7 hours driving at night in the outback

I can understand all the reasons except being paired LED bars, all state governments road authorities are now reviewing the laws regarding LED bars & DRL's, hopefully sensible resolution will ensue.

I think the policeman was bit harsh on the reason of single bar as in some other states they do not enforce this rule.

Ambulances in QLD have one single 40 cm LED light bar just above the grill with no blacked out section...

Funny how there are all these rules and here is our daily family bus with all the lights activated, they are all factory OEM lights:

And in the daylight:

But this is where we live so we need all the light we can get:

And yes that is the road:

Oh, so you live on a good road then...

The lightbar debacle has been going on for some time here in Queensland...the RACQ has been trying to get the government to take action (good luck...), but as I said you have to find the wrong cop on a really bad day to get booked for having "one" light. It's still very much a grey area where the legislation hasn't caught up with technology.
It's not a black and white issue like HID kits...they are actually a terrible idea in anything but vehicles with headlights specifically designed for them because of problems with light scatter and flare blinding everyone else on the road instead of actually casting an efficient beam with new headlight designs.
The light bar problem is basically one of wording...the ADR's say lights much be fitted "in pairs", so a light bar is stuck somewhere in between where they haven't allowed for someone designing one solid wide light.

I think his is actually a H3 .. which is the old Rodeo/Colorado platform.

You are correct, it is a H3.

The fog lights (round bottom outer lights) do very little, square inner are brilliant, they are adjusted to light up the sides of the road, they light up the whole side of the road where the kangaroos sit before they jump in front of your car. The top ones are pretty much useless they cause glare on the windscreen, however I believe they are a 'work' light used when setting up camp etc at night, as they operate independently and they come on with the ignition off and nothing else on, connected to their own switch. They are all OEM factory optioned lights, not after market fitted you can even see the two small factory switches:

Still don't get it, sorry, must be going over my head, they were not too expensive so no need winning the lotto, bought it brand new and payed cash for it working a normal job.

I wrote about this subject (lights in pairs)
on another site here on the Ford Forums
back in 1968 I had a Mk11 Zephyr and
it was fitted with a stop light in the back window
it actually had the letters S T O P on it
anyway I got pulled up by the cops and told to remove it
I asked why and was told lights had to be in pairs not odd numbers
so I unpluged it I often wondered about Rover 75s with 3 headlights
or even FX and FJ Holdens with only 1 tail/stop light
thanks John

I suspect the phase alludes that it's basically the underpinning of a Colorado with bling attached .. Pretending to be something more expensive than it is.

The exact opposite of a 70-series LandCruiser which looks like something from WW2 Russian front and costs more than a lot of luxury cars ..

It only became expensive later on...

Don't get this either, I am assuming you had a bad ownership experience?? So far in 7 years ours has not missed a beat towed a car tailer for thousands of KM and a camper around a large part of Australia, took me to countless remote fishing hunting and camping spots all without a single break down or mechanical issue, may be you were just unlucky with yours.

Don't think it pretends to be anything, its just a mid priced 4x4, and it's pretty good at what it does, very capable off road truck that is pretty hard to stop off road compared to most 4x4's.

well I said in this post no point putting expensive lights because it was not if but when I hit some wild life and damage the new lights

well 20 ks out of town i hit a emu roo bar stopped it and mud flap has some feathers stuck on it

I rang local police and waited 20 minutes before they arrive and put it down

I was just going for a quick drive out of town to charge up a new battery

the cops said it has been bad with roo and emus and lots of wild goats

I was very lucky not to have done more damage
