They all look like good Ute's, taking from all that from the article, one of the plusses for Toyota I see is the amount of testing, it would be interesting to know how much effort the other brand Ute's had in this area.

the Ranger had lots. and lots and lots and lots.

the amount of testing isn't what's relevant. The fact that they quote the Toyota as having driven 650,000km on Australian roads tells us nothing. Was it 6 cars driving from Melbourne to Sydney and back 500 times or what? All of the global car companies have global testing facilities that replicate all sorts of environments so it doesn't really matter where the testing is done. IMO where the Ranger wins is that the engineering is done in Australia, and those guys really do know and understand the environment. Where some Japanese engineer might say "okay that test is just about okay for the Aussies" the guys in Broady, Geelong and Lara go that bit further to make sure the car is really right for this market.

Interestingly the Ranger was a second quicker to 100 than the BT50, and the BT50 didn't get any of the engine changes or EPAS that the Ranger did. Hilux is even slower, and can only tow 3200 kg as an auto.

I thinkif toyota would do a test that is likely to give reliable test results, from past history, one would say so anyway.
Some other company's in the past have shown obviously they did not do decent testing as some vehicle s quickly started falling to bits as miles accrued.
I guess there's in an element of faith there but time will tell if it's misguided or not.

they suck so bad. my brother in laws colorado is currently getting another motor put in, first did 137km's and the next did 40000km's. its a horrible kidney smashing awkward ute

Did anyone notice the fuel use table in the Caradvice article, the Hilux real world results were 38% greater then the official rating stated by Toyota. Even if it's engine was tighter then the proverbial that's a massive difference between rw and claimed.

In terms of sales (combining 4x2 and 4x4 together) you wouldn't include the Navara as it isn't even in the top 5 being 7th overall.

I know 3 guys already, that have been waiting for the Hilux and have read reviews similar to these
And have ordered Rangers, this week.

Have they test driven the hilux ?? It doesn't worry me but after driving some of these vehicles ( not the new hilux ) I actually rate them very different to most of these reviews based on my needs. They can't go wrong with the ranger though its a pretty safe bet

Yep , they all drove the new Hilux, one bought the Ranger on the motor alone, one because he came across the Simpson desert in mine (comparing it to his current 2 yr old one), and the third was basically pressure from me☺
They've all had multiple Hiluxes too.

Did a bit more of a deep dive on the numbers in the Ute segment. The table below only looks at those models that are represented by both 4x2 and 4x4 models but that covers the bulk of the sales in the segment given the absence of any significant volume for the Falcon & Commodore based models.



In raw numbers, the big winners this year (overall) have been the Mitsubishi Triton and Isuzu Ute D-Max while the biggest losers have been the Toyota Hilux and Nissan Navara.

The Ranger had the lowest overall gain but mostly because the 4x2's lost ground which reduced the overall gain made by the 4x4.
