Every time I think of asbestos it reminds me of the former asbestos mining town of Wittenoom in WA. The state government has removed it from maps and the signs for the town are gone, power cut off. Had a population of 7000 during the mining boom with 2000 dying from cancer. It's population is about 6 today. Eerie place to visit.

I remember they rode very quiet and smoothly compared to the old red rattlers. And even the newer trains.

But asbestos behind the interior linings would have been quite safe unless disturbed. Bit different about the brakes on trains though, anywhere you went at railway stations etc and with trains braking, you smelt brake dust. I'm sure the dust would have contained asbestos.

Sad ending to the blue trains. I liked them.

Its amazing how ubiquitous asbestos was in the old days. My house was built in 1971 and still mostly original, and there's asbestos everywhere, even the vinyl floor tiles are asbestos backed.

Even more worryingly, it was discovered a few years ago that the hessian underlay used under carpet up to the 1980's was made from recycled Hessian bags.

That sounds all well and good......
except the Hessian bags were often sourced from James Hardie - who used them to transport the raw Asbestos tailings from Wittenoom, etc.

Actually.........
the filters in Kent cigarettes, were made from Asbestos in the 1950's.

In their quest for the perfect fiber to use for filters, Hollingsworth & Vose (H&V) produced one made with crocidolite asbestos and tightly packed crepe paper in 1952.
H&V produced the filters for Lorillard, and they were used in the Kent Micronite brand of cigarettes.
The new filter was marketed as "the greatest health protection in cigarette history."

The company never revealed to the public that asbestos was the primary ingredient in its "dustless" cigarette.

As a sparky, I can tell you the majority of the houses built from 1950s-1970s contain large amounts of asbestos. It's always something that you have to be very mindful of whenever you are doing maintenance, repairs or new installations.

I'll simplify - my comment/\question was directed at the post that Road_Warrior made, which seemed to be saying that asbestos is ok because many kids played in it and are still alive now - "Yep. Just ask any of the kids (now adults) that are still alive and grew up in Wittenoom"

Funny?

Hello,

Asbestos is only a matter of time. It is like running Red lights, eventually it will get you. Even though you may die from other causes before it does. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mr_Fluffy If this guy liked you, he would put more in. Guess what he died from ?
