Puma trademark registration could point to badge for Ford’s Baby Bronco

FORD appears to be preparing to resurrect the Puma badge, lodging a fresh global trademark application under that name for a future model that conceivably could be the upcoming compact SUV dubbed – in the absence of any official name – the Baby Bronco.

The company previously used the Puma name on a Fiesta-based small coupe made in Germany between 1997 and 2002, but as Ford is largely walking away from passenger cars, especially in North America, it is unlikely to be planning a new version of that slow-selling sportscar.


Lodged on October 26 by Ford Motor Company’s head office in Dearborn, Michigan, the trademark application specifically mentions “four-wheel drive vehicles and sports utility vehicles”.


For Australia, the application has been lodged with the Federal Government’s IP Australia.


Ford earlier this year confirmed that it was planning an off-road-focussed compact SUV, showing a sketch of the car in a briefing about its future model strategy.


The vehicle will sit below the all-new Bronco that is also in the pipeline for launch in the next year or two. The Bronco will be based on the Australian-developed T6 platform that underpins the Ranger ute and related Everest SUV.


Like the Bronco, the Baby Bronco is expected to be a more hard-core off-roader than other Ford soft-roader SUVs such as the Escape/Kuga and EcoSport, and will likely target the market segment dominated by smaller Jeep models such as the Renegade Trailhawk.


Some American pundits have speculated that the Baby Bronco might be called Maverick, as that name has been trademarked in the US.


Maverick was used by Ford in Australia for re-badged Nissan GQ Patrols in the 1980s and 1990s.


However, the original 1984 trademark for Maverick in Australia has been withdrawn by Ford and not renewed, making it unlikely that the name will be used globally any time soon.


Speculation about the Baby Bronco reached fever pitch in the US media earlier this week when images of a Ford SUV – purportedly taken at a Ford dealer conference in Las Vegas – were published by Off-Road.com.


Some sections of the media speculated that the images were of the Bronco, while others suggested it looked smaller, and so could be of Bronco’s baby sibling. Ford was not saying.

We all know Ford is bringing the Bronco back; they’ve publicly stated this. We’re all hoping for a tough, body-on-frame, solid-axle Wrangler competitor like the Broncos of old. A Wrangler-competing Bronco is still in the cards and could very well happen by 2020, but some recently discovered images on an official Ford website indicate the Bronco could be a lot more disappointing than we hoped, or there could be more than one Bronco coming in the future.

These photos popped up on the internet with the claim they were found on a publicly accessible part of Ford’s website from a Las Vegas dealer meeting, although, we are unable to locate these images anywhere on any official Ford websites. Supposedly, Ford said it plans to deliver the Bronco and a smaller, unnamed off-road vehicle in 2020. Although it’s possible these pictures show the 2020 Bronco, it’s also possible that Ford is bringing a “baby” Bronco to market, almost like a Bronco II. This would give them a competitor for the Renegade and Cherokee, which are popular alternatives to the Wrangler, and help Ford completely dominate the off-road market.


Further pushing the two “baby Bronco” possibility is a little easter egg in the photos shown. Notice anything weird about the shadow on the wall behind the vehicle shown? The shadow is for a much larger and boxier vehicle. It’s possible the shadow is supposed to represent the original Bronco, but that shadow is far too large and far too long for an original Bronco, so could it possibly be the shadow of the real Bronco coming in 2020? Only time will tell.





I think the images from the first link show the Puma, based on the leaked photo that has the shadow of the Bronco behind it. Based on the image Ford posted a couple of months ago of the sheet covered Bronco. The shape of the Puma is different to the shape of the Bronco.

Good to see Ford going after Jeep with these 2. Not sure if we will see them here though. Although the trademark application for Puma might be a sign, although i'm sure they trademark a lot of names so other manufacturers don't use them. I wonder if the Bronco name has been trademarked here?

edit: No, we got the cousin, the Cougar!
Europe had the Ford Puma.

That is a big growth area, and Jeep basically do not have much in the way of competitors for the Wrangler. They have basically had that market to themselves since the Bronco was killed off in the 90's. It's white space that Ford are not competing in atm.

Having a smaller version in the Puma is an excellent idea too. It's like it covers both the full size and smaller generations of the Bronco.

Late?
All they ever gave us was off the shelf RHD Euro products but now that FOE
is set for a giant makeover product wise, maybe we'll see a better showroom
of more appropriate vehicles.

Actually, part of me wonders if Puma is a much simpler plan like renaming
Fiesta Active as Puma for Australia as a way to distance it from the Fiestas...
